When I come into the Church, and our marriage is blessed, I don't know really what to wear.  LOL  It seems sort of vain, but I don't want to under or over do it :P  Are certain colors more appropriate than others, being fall/winter, you know black and red are popular right now.  It's a big joke in my family, but I am limited to what Goodwill has on their half off day.  ROFLOL

I'm sort of embarrassed, but who else can I ask?  For dh it's easy, throw on a suit and a tie and that's it.

These are three styles I liked, are the colors ok?

Choice #1

Choice #2

Choice #3

Thanks!
Ali

Choice #1 I couldn't get the link to work

Choice #2 If you were my daughter I'd be pointing out the lack of sleeves

Choice #3 it's got sleeve but I actually prefer the blue of #2:D

Have a great day

Regards Dave

choice 1 didn't show but two and three are fine in my opinion- the blue is sleeveless but not tiny spaghettis straps so would be ok. If you are unsure of the sleeveless issue- get a shrug to wear over it

How exciting!  You are finally making real plans for this, instead of having to worry about if it's going to happen!  Choice #1 didn't show up, I agree with the others: blue is a better color, but wear a little something over your shoulders and arms.  A pretty shrug or stole of some sort.  A shawl you could pass down to one of your children.  Take pictures for us!! :D

Wow!  Goodwill sure has nice clothes in your neighborhood!

Seriously, it depends on the significance you choose to give the ceremony.  I've literally seen everything from blue jeans to wedding gowns.  I think I prefer your third choice (first link didn't work for me, either) because it seems to be something that could be worn again more easily, but then I'm a man so what do I know?  My personal fashion choices are limited to ties that match with khaki.

Oooohhh, this is exciting, Ali.

I like the blue color of #2 and the sleeves of #3.

At my chapel low-cut necklines are rare. It's a very conservative group.
Your parish may be different, though.

Marsha's suggestion about the shrug is good.

Hi and congratulations on your plans to become "officially" Catholic!

I really like #2 & #3. I wore a blue outfit myself but with a dressy jacket over the sleeveless top.

I would have no problem with the red. It is the traditional color of our confirmation robes. Blue suggests baptism. I saw a black and white outfit that also looked great.

I guess I'd vote for the blue with an extra top of some kind. But hey, wear whatever seems best to you!

I'm going to be confirmed and take my first communion in two weeks. I can't wait to finally enter the Church! But - I'll ask this too - what am I to wear? Does color matter? I know little kids wear white... And, do I have to wear something really nice? I don't know, I just don't have a lot of money to spare right now. College students are poor... Thoughts?

Check out goodwill store for nice outfits- sometimes you can get a really nice outfit that looks new- people buy them for an event and then don't wear them again. Also just a new blouse to go with a skirt or dress slacks would be fine too. Just something that makes you feel "special" that day- obviously it must be church suitable too!:)

Will you be the only one confirmed in that service?
If so, you could ask the priest what color vestments he will be wearing.

I was the only one confirmed in the service. The priests/deacons (13 present and participating) wore red and white. I wore a red shell and an inexpensive solid white blazer. Several persons commented on how lovely it looked having everyone color-coordinated. Maybe you could borrow a jacket/blazer from a friend.

I think the trick is to ask why those "little kids wear white"?

I remember a confirmation class of a few years ago. One girl had grown up apart from the church, her parents never attended, they did not even accompany her to her classes, so she had no "collective memory" to fall back on. When the subject of what to wear was raised towards the end of the program, no specific guidance was given just a very vague "wear something nice." So on the day they all turned up all the boys in their black suits with white shirts & bow ties, all the girls in either white or cream ankle length dresses, and Lauren in what I'm sure she thought was a "nice" hot pink 'boob tube' with black mini-skirt. I remember the look of horror on her face as she came to understand, looking at her classmates, that her definition of "nice" was different from the catechist's. However she didn't turn around & go home as I'm sure she was tempted, she was confirmed with the rest of her class. Bravest thing I ever saw!

The point however that wasn't explained to Lauren is why we choose what wear to Mass in general and take even more care on special occasions. For baptism, white is appropriate as a symbol of purity as is reflected in the ceremony. Confirmation and First Eucharist complete the process of initiation started with baptism, so white is still appropriate. Similarly check out what colours are typically chosen by brides and candidates for Holy Orders.:) By Baptism one is reborn into the life of Grace in Christ and His Church, and the other sacraments assume that Grace is present from Baptism or restored through Confirmation.

So I guess when it comes to choosing a colour to wear when receiving a sacrament I would suggest a choice of white unless there is a good reason to go otherwise, and if choosing otherwise I would recommend contemplating what message you are sending by choosing a given colour and also what message will be received by your choice. My wife wore an ivory blouse with a dark floral skirt when she was received into the church in '93.

Once we get past the issue of colour we must also consider the style and so forth, which I would argue for "formal" rather that "casual" a Sacrament is a big thing (even weekday mass) and those sacraments that can be received only once (Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Orders) are REALLY big (I was tempted to put Marriage in that list but strictly speaking it doesn't quite fit.

Of course "formal" is a culture dependent term and I would qualify that description by adding the term modest, there was a time when formality included modesty but that doesn't necessarily follow these days:?

Regards Dave

Dr. Dave, what a great father you must be for daughters! Lucky girls.

Uh, given your emphasis on modesty, I thought maybe I'd better clarify that along with that red shell and white blazer I also wore a black skirt.

Dress nicely as befits the occasion and you'll be fine.  The priest will (should) be wearing purple vestments for the season of Advent, if it takes place at a Sunday mass.  Remember that the priest will anoint your forehead with oil, so an appropriate hair style is called for.  The season is Advent, which is penitential, so not too much "bling".

The Lord takes us as we are.

Actually they do.  I buy pretty much all my work-out-the-home job clothes there.  I've bought six complete outfits for $30.  That was a good day!  LOL

Thanks for those suggestions!

We went to Goodwill yesterday, and they didn't have anything.  I showed dh one of those dresses, and he thought I was going to buy it.  Uh, it's a whole bunch of money!  So I'm not sure what I'm going to do.  I need to do something, though!   I'm running out of time.  Although I do appriciate him not minding that I spent that much on an outfit. Gotta love a husband like that!

I'll let you all know what I chose, cause I know you are just sitting one the edge of your seats waiting!  ROFL

Ali,

I thought I'd toss in my two cents too.  When I was received into the Church (in December) I wore an emerald green dress with a beige lace collar and fake pearl buttons down the front.  It was short sleeved and fell just below my knees.

I asked the priest what I should wear, and he told me whatever.  He said that during my baptism he would give me a white robe to put on, and since we were having our marriage blessed he told me I could even wear my wedding gown if I wanted to.  So I just chose the nicest dress I had hanging in my closet.  I thought about wearing white; but in early December I couldn't find anything white that I liked, and the gauzy "beach" dress just didn't do it.

As for your choices--one wouldn't show for me.  I liked the blue, but I agree with the others--wear a bolero or something with it.  I really like the third one in black.  It is very elegant.  And as Rick says, it seems you might get more use out of it.

The important thing that day is what is inside, not outside.  Wear what you are comfortable in.  And let the light you radiate that day be what people remember, not what you are wearing.

Beth

P.S.  Wear comfy shoes!  You may be standing for a while.

Thanks for your words of wisdom.  But this spcial occation  I am using as a one time excuse to buy a pair or ridiculously high heeled black shoes that are lovely to look at but are tortuous to wear ;)  I haven't had a pair of shoes like that in 10 years!

LOL

Which means that your feet and legs are ten years older than the last time you wore them!

Ali, we will gladly read your complaints about sore feet and sympathize for an entire week after, but don't you dare stretch it one day longer!  Just bring some slippers to put on when you get back in the car!

Dr Dave, what a great story you posted. and... uhm, remind me to ask you for fashion advice. They must make guys more often with fashion sense down under. Geez!
I liked your explanation of choosing an appropriate color for the occasion.

And I'd like to reiterate the others' remarks about modesty. In the 'old' days, women never went to Church without arms covered.

Ali, I love Goodwill and the Salvation Army too!!! I have found so much good stuff there.

Well, I guess you got the idea now - we want pictures of The Outfit you do choose. How can you leave us hanging?

And congratulations - what a happy day!!!! When's the day?
