Any time I try to correct an incorrect statement made by either protestants or ex catholics I get told " Yes but you just became Catholic" ( so obviously don't know what I am talking about). The same phrase used  by either protestant or secular friends and family " she just became Catholic  gives the unspoken subtext " it is just a phase that she is going through- like a 3 yr old's temper tantrums or a teen's flirtation with being a vegetarian.  On the other hand I have not heard those words from a practicing Catholic.

Hi Kim,

People often try to dismiss ideas and opinions for something other than a "reasonable reason." I would go on to say something like, "well, maybe I am new, but that has no bearing on whether x is true or not. If you disagree with me, please explain why, but don't just go after me as a person, which is the ad hominem fallacy and doesn't prove anything at all."

In other words, put the burden on them to back up what they say. They either will or they'll get mad, but at least you won't let the dumb dismissal pass. And they probably won't pull it again, so it helps you too, to be less frustrated.

Kim, the only persons who have made that remark to me were practicing Catholics. Their point seemed to be that new Catholics are too enthralled with the wonder of it all to see Catholicism or the Church objectively.

The first year I was married, my mother used to say, "Just wait until you've been married twenty-five years. Then you'll sing a different tune about marriage and husbands." But, of course, after thirty-four years of marriage, I found both marriage and my husband to be even more wondrous than they were the first year. :)

I fully expect to have the same experience with Catholicism and the Church.

No doubt, but it need not take 25 years! ;)

I use the term frequently.  But in the circles I travel it is accepted as a known quantity that those who "just became Catholic" are newly-illumined and likely more orthodox than some "cradle Catholics"!

In my world, those that "just became Catholic" as adults... who chose the Catholic faith over all else, and came to it with full acceptance can generally be counted on to accept the fullness of the Faith more often then those who begin sentences "I was raised Catholic but..."

Welcome home!

Haha.  Yes.  Kim, the term is called "ad hominem circumstantial."  ((Glad that Logic course came in good for something.))

Yes, but you've been 39 longer than Jack Benny.

My dh heard a good one yesterday.  He was talking to a Baptist at his (new) work and told him about this weekend.  The Baptist replied by saying "Oh, I'm sorry to hear that".  LOL, and sad all at the same time.  Then he starting talking about how Catholics added all those extra books to the Bible.  Dh isn't quite good enough to argue (either that, or he isn't quite as stubborn as me), so he let it go.

No, it's because you're so much older than me.  I won't be 21 until next year (remember, I started counting over at my overhaul in 1987).

So I won't even be 39 for another 19 years!  You know what that makes you?  (The name Methuselah comes to mind.)

You guys are just too funny! But I just have to jump in by saying... And they say women lie about their age?! :D

P.S.  Yeah, yeah, Rick... I know. I know. Getting off topic and all that, but you guys started it! :P

I'm not lying.  It is common to measure a car's mileage from the last engine overhaul, so I started counting over when they overhauled my heart.  Dave and Criff have to answer for themselves.

P.S. Yeah, yeah, Rick... I know. I know. Getting off topic and all that, but you guys started it! :P
The topic of this thread is pet peeves.  That covers a whole lot of territory!

So Rick, are you claiming to be Dick VanDykes Mother?

Nope.  It was Jerry Van Dyke's TV mother, Ann Sothern.  I actually remembered, but I looked it up to make sure I was right.

I understand. You would know more about those OLD TV programs than I would. I am dependent on history books about them while you probably watch the shows first run. ;)

I vaguely remember hearing the cartoon versions in utero.

At least I look 39. Even younger if I dye my goatee, like my wife wants me to . . . :D

And the pic to the left was taken in 2000, when I was 42. Less grey in the beard then!
