Hi all,
I wanted to tell you something that happened to me just today. As you may know, I am in aperiod in my life where I am working on being confirmed and conditionally baptized in the Catholic Church. Well, I have to back up just a bit here because a few weeks ago I recieved a Medal of St. Benedict that I wear all the time, and my Spiritual Director gave me a Rosary just today that was blessed by Pope Benedict XVI. So really, I have an affection for St. Benedict.
Anyway, I had placed the Rosary in my shirt pocket and really had not thought of it being in there, and really I had not yet prayed the Rosary with it or rubbed my medal like I do at times, however I can tell you that Benedict has really been with me today. I got a call from Social Security today saying that my mom had filed on her Social Security and that I had to apply for Social Security by filing on her record. We went through the interview process over the phone, and by the end of the call I was told that once I get out of here and into assisted living, I would be able to get a great increase in the amount I get each month. Now I am going to get my award letter very soon, but I knew that God knew of the things I needed before I asked, but I never knew that He would answer prayer before I even had a chance to ask the prayer.
Now, I still have other things that I am going to be working on in the month of January, and that is 1) my confirmation into the Catholic Church as I said, and 2)trying to get into an assisted living facility. I will keep you posted.

One of the great advantages of the Communion of Saints is that we have advocates in heaven praying for us, often before we even know we need their prayer. Sounds like St. Benedict wants to be your patron saint! Benedict would certainly be a good Confirmation name.

Does that mean that my spiritual name is Benedict? If so, I would not mind adopting that as a spiritual name... Let's see Jason S.Benedict King.

The bible tells us that new names were given on the assumption of new roles: Abram/Abraham, Sarai/Sarah, Simon/Peter, Saul/Paul, etc. When Catholics are confirmed we take on a new name to reflect our new role as adult Christians. It is recommended you choose a saint you can emulate, and it sounds like Benedict wants to be your patron. So yes, that would be your "spiritual name" if you choose it.

Rick, I see where you are coming from, however I see two obsticals in the way. First, I would have to change my name legally (i.e. Social Security, I.D. card, etc.) and also I do not think that the people who are opposed to me coming into the Church would adapt to well to the change. Any thoughts?

| It is a ceremonial change noted on church related papers rather than a physical one requiring legal name changes. Many people add it as a middle name in common use vrs. uses that need legal id-

OK so the name I suggested earlier (Jason S. Benedict King) would do just what you suggested? Or better yet, what about King Benedict? LOL

We do not change our names, we take on an additional name to reflect the additional responsibilities given to us by our Confirmation. My birth name is Richard John, and my Confirmation name is Paul.
In a similar manner, many religious sisters and brothers take on other names, while maintaining their own names for legal purposes. The rector of the seminary at St. Joseph's Abbey in Covington, Louisiana, is Fr. Gregory Boquet, but the name on his birth certificate and passport is "Mark Boquet" and that's what his family and friends still call him.
In a similar manner, Simon did not stop being Simon and Saul did not stop being Saul. They became known as Peter and Paul within the Christian community. (In Paul's case, "Saul" was his Hebrew name, and "Paul" was his Roman name.) And today, popes do not stop being who they were when they assume the papacy. Pope Benedict XVI is still Joseph Ratzinger and always will be. No doubt that is the name under which his Vatican passport is issued.
