Good morning,

My name is Danica-Christine, 18,  from South Africa. I'm a convert from Protestantism to the Catholic Faith! I'm so happy to finally be here.

Some background on my country: For those who were taught we live in huts:

We're just as civilised as any American, or so. South Africa's cities, Pretoria and Johannesburg, look like just London, England. :D

And no, we don't speak 'South African', we speak Afrikaans, English, Sutu, Zulu, and about 9 other languages, not included in that list. :P

We have people of all colors, races, and religions here; White (as I am originally from Holland, all white people come from there, for the most part), tribal (black, 11 different tribes), Asian, Korean, Muslim, Jews, etc.

On our streets, you'll hear around 11-13 diferent languages being spoken all at ones. Annoying? No, not quite; you get use to it.

And, we won the Rugby World Cup 2007!! :D:P

Oh, and no, there aren't any lions at our airports, unless it's tame. So be at ease. :D

The Big 5 are all tucked away safely at game reserves and such. Oh, and no, we don't sleep in little huts, unless you live in Africa, and you're from a tribe.

There's a difference between South Africa and Africa. ;)

We're very nice people. :D

Just thought I'd add some humout to my post. :)

Thank you all for this forum - it's wonderful.

God bless.

Danica, thank you for the "snapshot" of where you live!  It sounds so interesting.  What would you say is the percentage of catholics there?  It is very small where I live.  Most people get their ideas of what other countries are like from media, movies and TV.  It's not always accurate!  Thanks

Especially during an election year!

Glad to have you with us, Danica.  Many of us have at least some familiarity with South Africa and think kindly of the nation that gave us Nelson Mandella and Desmond Tutu.

Even if you don't use "z's"!

Thank you all for the warm welcome. :)

I thought I'd list a few things about myself, and my current conversion.

When my great grandfather moved from Holland to South Africa, he, along with his family, were all atheists. Which comes as no surprise.

My mother was the first Christian in the entire family, for goodness knows how many generations! :D

She attended a Dutch Reformed Church as a child and young lady, but gave her heart to the Lord at the age of 15, I believe. But her father rebuked her, and banned her from going to her Charis church.

Thankfully, my mother found the Lord again at age 20, and has been saved for over 30 years! :)

My mother taught me of our Lord even prior to my birth; and that is what I thank God for  everyday of my life.

Unfortunately, neither my mother, nor I, knew where the Protestant church really came from. This, in itself, has been a great eye-opener for the both of us.

I am, as of yet, not an official Catholic, as it is yet impossible for me to go to a Church on my own; I also need my step-father's blessing in order to do so.

I would like to ask those of you to please remember my family in your prayers. That, through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, my father and mother will be converted - just as I was.

Credo Catholic:
Catholicism, believe it or not, is the second biggest church/faith in South Africa! But is the most persecuted, too. That is why I've never met any Catholics - except for the two folks at the Catholic store.

I can assure all of you that mostly everything that you've seen on television, books, etc., about my country, is not in any way true.

But, unfortunately, we have the highest crime rate in the world. :(

Our president, Thabo M. Beki, never lived up to any of his promises; and, thus, has let the murderers come away with everything. :?

But we trust God for a new - Godly - president. Gosh, how we wish that Jeorge W. Bush was our president! :D

He's truly a great person.

God bless!

Who do you think will win this election, Rick? Certainly not Hillary!

I hope the black gentleman, or the other Christian gentleman will win. But please - not her!

The remaining Democrat candidates (Hillary and Barak Obama) are both so pro-abortion I don't see how any Catholic could support them.  I certainly can't.

There are only two left?!

Just shows how little television I watch.

So, what you mean to say is, either way, a pro-abortionist is going to win? This is horrible. :X

We need to pray that Our Lady of America will intercede for her country, at the feet of Her Holy Son, Jesus.

I will certainly keep the US in my prayers, Rick. :)

God bless.

I'm terrified there will be an Obama-Clinton ticket.  Stranger things have happened before in politics.

I'm hoping McCain will continue to pick up momentum, he's not my first choice but seems to be the best hope for the GOP.

There are two political parties in the US, the Democrats and the Republicans.

There are two major Democrats left in the race, Hillary Clinton and Barak Obama.  Both are pro-abortion.

There are three major Republicans left, Mike Huckaby, Mitt Romney, and John McCain.  All three claim to be pro-life, although Romney has previously been pro-abortion and says he realized he was wrong and changed his position.

Next Tuesday (5 February) some 20 states will hold primaries that may decide who the major candidates will be.  The actual election will not be held until November.

I'm glad to hear that there's still hope left, Rick. As Our Lady of Medjugorje inquires of us, "Pray, pray, pray!" :)

Your country is in my prayers, Rick.

South Africa is in a big mess at the moment. We have almost no electricity left, due to our 'all-so-bright-and-very-wealthy' head of government, not paying for electricity, but, on the contrary, taking over R700,000,000 for themselves!

We are also the sponsors, and 'soul-source' of power to most neighboring African countries. Oh joy. :?

S.A. has lost billions of Rands in the last 5 months due to this problem. Now, the government says that this will g on for the next 5 years!

We can expect weeks without power.:X

Whilst, the head of electricity, received a R45,000,000 bonus in December. ;):X

He's monthly salary is, no kidding, an astounding R9,000,000! Not even the president, of any country, receives that p/m.

Our economy is falling at the moment, as well. What's left of it, anyway. :?

Please pray for my nation, as I pray for yours.

Several wars have broken out, as well. We're heading into one at the moment - A.N.C. Vs. Zuma.

Those are the two black governments, and now, all the rest are being pulled into it, as well.

My aunt said to me, "We can be lucky we're white."

I answered her by saying, "White, black, or Korean - we're all going to suffer under this."

We have to look away from the race difference, and see God in everyone. Look at Martin Luther -  was he black? No - he was a German; he did more damage than most.

Our elections are also in the process. That's where the war is coming from.

God bless.

This thread is certainly interesting. I have been saving for a long time for a safari to Africa. South Africa is a possibility as is Namibia. It will be a while before I have enough money and then my health may prevent it but I like to learn all I can that would make a determination for me about where to go for a multi-day multi-species hunt. The TV shows only show the hunt but say nothing about the dangers caused by the political turmoil in some places which can be more dangerous than going against a Cape buffalo with a .22 caliber rifle. (the Cape buff is not my favorite species).

dreaming of impalas (not the kind with wheels made by General Motors),

Annie

Fortunately, most of the world is so grateful for tourism that tourists are rarely targeted except in the most volatile areas.  The Department of State keeps a list of countries that Americans are advised not to visit.  The CIA also has a great web site with lots of valuable information on countries around the world.

The best trip I ever took was to Haiti, which was/is not exactly a vacation paradise, since it is/was the second poorest region on earth.  Even in the worst areas we were permitted to visit, we were treated as honored guests because the residents knew we would be coming back home to raise money for them.

Anyone interested can visit my web site to read about my Retreat Into Reality.  It was an incredible journey which took place only three weeks after the attacks of 9/11/01.

Danica, I'm sorry you and your family are having to witness the war going on around you.  And the power outages.  It's hard for us here to imagine what it would be like to go for weeks without power.  Are you in danger?  I'm so glad you have the comfort of the catholic church to help.

Actually, not if you've been through a major hurricane.  Some people in New Orleans didn't have power for 18 months after Katrina.  Two and a half years after the storm, some people are still waiting for housing, and quite a few were kicked out of their FEMA trailers today.  They've been living in them even though FEMA will not allow their employees to enter because of toxic formaldehyde fumes.  As the people move out of the trailers, they're being treated as toxic waste.

As phenomenal as our wonderful United States is, Katrina proved just how close we are to descending into anarchy.  It can happen in a day in any major city in the world, including the United States.  Our infrastructure is old and delicate.

Naples, Italy, has had a garbage worker's strike for months, and the trash on the streets has continued to pile up.  The stench is unbearable.  A heavy rain will clog the storm drains, and they will be in the same condition as New Orleans was on August 29, 2005.

We all know the conditions in Darfur, Somalia, and in Kenya.  Did you know that Port Au Prince, Haiti, was once known as the Pearl of the Carribbean?  Today it is a festering slum.  The beautiful harbor is visibly polluted and it stinks.

The San Francisco earthquakes, the Chicago fire, the World Trade Center attacks on 9/11/01, the tidal wave in the Indian Ocean of 12/26/04, and countless other disasters, natural and man-made, have demonstrated repeatedly just how slim the line is between civilization and chaos.

It wouldn't take a nuclear attack.  All it takes is an extended power failure on a hot summer day or a cold winter night.

A decade ago, South Africa was a "poster child" for the success of democracy.  Six months ago, it was Kenya.  Today they have both collapsed.  We can only pray that it doesn't happen here.  Never forget that Adolph Hitler was elected.

Dear Friends,

Thank you for your messages.

Our government has stated that we might have to without power for about 5 years in certain areas in S.A. *Gulp*

That's why our good Lord invented power generators! :P:D

None of us are in any more danger than we are already. But our God Most High will protect us. :)

That is so true, Rick - Hitler was elected. No offence to Hilary, but what I've read/seen about her, she's more the female type, modern-day, Hitler. :X

I can't believe that any woman, in her right mind, could ever be a pro-aborionist! Not to mention, a president candidate! :(

You're right, as well, concering the fact that a modern-day Hitler could strike any of us, at any given time. But the more I ponder on this fact, the more I see how close we are to our Lord's return. :)

That is but the only could thing in this time of chaos.

Always in my rpayers,
Danica-Christine. :)
