Earlier this evening (Sunday) our electricity went out for nearly two hours. We have had cold, high winds, in the Richmond, VA area today, so there have been some trees falling, power outages, etc. Ironically, I was reading a thread on the forum here when our electricity went off.  Thankfully, we have flashlights and a lantern which my wife got from her employer as an annual safe driving award (she's a social worker and has to go see clients a lot, the county is grateful when the employees drive safely and don't wreck the cars).  Even so, when the electricity goes out, our heat pump doesn't work. We have deep wells for water out here, with electric pumps, and when the electricity is off, no water.  It was so cold and windy we decided to stay home and did not go to church, today, however, we did watch some broadcasts of worship services including EWTN's Daily Mass. When the electricity went off, I was angry with the electric company and had very uncharitable feelings towards them, however, as I sat in cold resentment, in our house, I started to remember Nuns, Monks and Priests, Ministers and Christian workers who had, in long times past, gone out into the wilderness, long  before electricity and heat pumps and electric water pumps,  facing all sorts of hardships and threats including my favorite Blessed Junipero Serra who had a leg problem similar to mine yet went on to found missions in California and to bring the Gospel to Native Americans and Spanish settlers there (his statue is found in the halls of the U.S. Capitol as one of California's most influential, greatest people).  When the electricity came back on, we watched the news and I saw stories about how some people, in our area, had been without electricity all day, some power lines coming down had caused some brush fires which have driven people from their homes and caused them to have to sleep in shelters tonight. Not to mention the brave firefighters and electrical workers who have been working hard in cold weather and high winds.  It was all I could do, however, I lifted up prayers for them after I prayed for forgiveness for my stupid sinfulness in selfishly griping because our electricity was off for a little while.  God does many things to reach and teach many people. Maybe He let our electricity go off for a little while to help remind me of some things - a very mild lesson compared to what some others are going through.  I will be up praying for others for a while tonight. I pray for God's blessings upon all of you, too. You all are a blessing to me and I hope and pray that you are all safe and warm tonight!

Thank you, Marshall, for offering that story and perspective.  We do take our comforts for granted and hate being "inconvenienced."  But there is always someone who is or was worse off, isn't there?

And wasn't it blessedly quiet while the electricity was off??  :)

Jill
