Greetings!  I was watching an archived video of The Journey Home and somehow, I found my way here.  What a great idea, The Coming Home Network!

Although I've attended RCIA classes, I have not yet made it to becoming Catholic.   I'm an Anglican, and I consider myself Anglo-Catholic.  (Maybe "crypto-Catholic" would be more appropriate!)  But anyway, life is complicated, and so here I am.

A warm welcome to you, Michael, from a half-Canadian (my dad was born in Ontario). I traveled through New Brunswick in 2004, too. Feel free to inquire about whatever is on your mind. This is a friendly place, but still informative (a rare mix these days on the Internet).

Hi Michael,

Welcome!  Both my girls are attending Anglo-Catholic churches.  So close and yet so far!  Do you think you'll come all the way over?

By the way, the services they attend are beautifully done.  I can see why it might be hard to leave.... unfortunately.

Jill

Hello, Michael. Welcome to the forum.

Your avatar reminds me of artists I noticed while driving between Santa Cruz and Monterey in California. Is the painting an important part of your life?

Michael,

Welcome to the forum. By looking at your website, I could see that you are very talented. May you enjoy your times here, even during periods of doubt and soul searching.
Psalm 133
1  A song of ascents. Of David. How good it is, how pleasant, where the people dwell as one! 2 Like precious ointment on the head, running down upon the beard, Upon the beard of Aaron, upon the collar of his robe. 3 Like dew of Hermon coming down upon the mountains of Zion. There the LORD has lavished blessings, life forevermore! Psalms 133:1-3 (NAB)
(I noticed that you have a beard).

YBIC,
Bill

We're glad you found your way to us, and we'll do our best to support your faith journey, wherever it might happen to lead.

You might even be my cousin, since my ancestors came from Acadie!

My goodness, what a surprising amount of replies overnight!  Thanks so much for the warm welcome, everyone.

Just to clarify - I'm an ex-pat American living in Canada.  Starting next winter, my wife and I will be wintering in the States and splitting our time between the two countries.

Jill - Indeed, I'd like to go all the way over!  My issue is that I travel a good deal, move a good deal, and it's difficult to get to RCIA classes to actually finish the program.  If only they'd have an on-line version.  (It's not to be, and I understand why.)

Becky - Yes, I'm a painter.  It's what I do.  I paint, teach painting and write about painting.

Wow, Michael! I continue to be amazed by the talented people on this forum. Now we have you!

I visited your website and especially liked Hacienda Morning. Although totally without artistic ability myself, I have learned to watch lighting and enjoy an artist's treatment of shadow. Into the Blue is also a favorite.

Your schedule for conducting workshops looks daunting.  If completing RCIA classes just isn't working, maybe you could find a priest willing to meet with you privately.  Especially with the book United States Catholic Catechism for Adults, a motivated adult can prepare sections of material independently and then discuss it with a priest.  With the purchase of the audio CD set of that book, you could listen to it while journeying to various workshops. :)

Yeah that has been huge for my teens- to leave the pomp of our High Anglican service and all it's music ( our music director was  known in our town for her music, she taught at the college) for the rather plain workaday Mass. They were used to being altar servers in a fairly elaborate procession  etc. Since they are 17 and 15 they really are too old to become altar servers at our new church.

Michael, it's very possible that coming from a high-church Anglican background, very little preparation would be necessary to bring you into the Church.  You should discuss it with a priest and if he's not willing/able to be flexible with meeting times, etc., find another priest who is more accommodating.  This is envisioned within the RCIA structure, so it's not breaking any rules of the Church as a whole, although it's possible it may run counter to the instructions in some dioceses and so a consultation with the bishop or RCIA coordinator for the diocese might prove necessary.

Meanwhile, the Knights of Columbus have online courses you can take in the Catholic faith through their Catholic Information Service, either online or in booklet format.  At the completion of the course you take a test and get a certificate.  This would demonstrate that you have indeed been taking instruction.  Little additional preparation should be necessary.

Canon law specifies that no sacrament should be denied to any person who is properly prepared and validly requests it.  Once you have demonstrated your preparation, you will be expected to make a profession of faith, confess your sins, be confirmed, and then receive the Eucharist.  At that point you will be a fully initiated Catholic.

Thanks, Rick; that's great news!  I'll definitely pursue that angle.

A couple of years ago, I did the entire course from Catholic Home Study (http://www.amm.org/chss.htm).  I passed!  :D
