Hello everyone,
I've been lurking on this forum for the past several weeks, and now that I'm hooked, I guess it's times to come out of the shadows.
I'm a former Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod pastor, and will, with my family, be received into the Church this Easter, God willing. I'll have to hold off on the details of our conversion for now, but I'm happy to be "here" (on this forum).
Please keep us in your prayers, as I have several mouths to feed, and no job--not to mention, no clear idea about what I will do for a living as a Catholic.
Dan

Hi Dan,
Praise God about you and your family coming into the Church. I have immense admiration for the sacrifice you have made, job-wise. Wow. I sure hope and pray that you will be able to find suitable employment soon.
I do know that God highly honors a person who is willing to give up so much for the sake of following Him more closely, according to conscience and discovered truth. He will provide in due course, I'm convinced (not to say there won't be some lean times in the interim).
Welcome to the forum. I'm sure you will be a great contributor, with your background, and I hope we will be of some aid and comfort to you as well.

Hi Dan!
I was received into the Church last Easter vigil and this year have the privilege of sponsoring my friend to be rec'd in a few weeks. Her husband is a Reformed Episcopal pastor and a teacher of Bible at a local Reformed high school. He'd be out on his ear, too, if he came into the Church, and he may be out if they hear about his uncontrollable wife. He's not sure yet which way to go, but I'm so excited for my friend and can't wait to be there when she receives her First Communion! I'll be thinking of you and your family on March 22nd.
I do hope that you'll share your story with us soon. I love conversion stories! I'm not sure why.... Why DO we love to read these stories - and I know we do because so many books filled with them have been written and are best sellers. Interesting...
Jill

Dan,
I'll be praying for you and your family. The good news in this is that your family is coming with you. That is an enormous blessing.
16 Then they who fear the LORD spoke with one another, and the LORD listened attentively; And a record book was written before him of those who fear the LORD and trust in his name. 17 And they shall be mine, says the LORD of hosts, my own special possession, on the day I take action. And I will have compassion on them, as a man has compassion on his son who serves him. 18 Then you will again see the distinction between the just and the wicked; Between him who serves God, and him who does not serve him. Mal 3:16-18 (NAB)
YBIC,
Bill

Thank-you all for the warm welcome!
I started writing out my "story" and already it's too long--and I have a way to go yet. I think i may make into into a blog, but I also want to create a condensed version.
Basically, I had been frustrated with the Missouri Synod since receiving Holy Orders. Part of it had to do with the issue of authority, due to how doctrine is determined in the LCMS. (In theory it is only decided by the Word of God, but ultimately, the majority of votes at the national convention decides what the Bible teaches. E.g. Currently the LCMS rejects the Ordination of Women because the Bible opposes it, but all it will take is 51% at the convention to say that the same verses to not apply to Woman's ordination.) The other thing with the issue of authority was that congregations are autonomous, and there is nothing that the Synod does to correct or discipline congregations with aberrant practices. Then a good pastor comes in, tries to fix things, and the congregation fires him.
I also found more and more that my love and devotion for the Eucharist was not shared by others in the Synod (with a few exceptions). This finally led me to understand that I do not belong there. I also found that most LCMS pastors and laypeople didn't even want to be Lutheran, but generic evangelicals.
So I was leaving before I knew where I was heading. Something (or SomeOne) put it in my mind to pick up the CCC, which I did, and here I am. Oh, and my wife too, for which I am very thankful.
While "Authority" was the issue that, for the most part, drove me out of Lutheranism, the Doctrine of Justification was the biggest obstacle to becoming Catholic. I'm not a "Secondary Sources" kind of guy, so I tackled Augustine's Anti-Pelagian writings, the decrees of Trent, the Confutatio, etc.
There is a saying that every error has an equal and opposite error. While I saw that while it was true the many of the Nominal Scholastics of Luther's day were hip deep in Semi-Pelagianism, Luther embraced an opposite error. It was Augustine who helped me see that what the Bible Teaches about Faith and Works is what is confessed in the Catholic Church.
So that is the short and unexciting version (as opposed to the long, unfinished, but equally unexciting version ).
"Da Quod Jubes" is a prayer of Augustine. "Give what Thou commandest, (and command what Thou wilt. (et jube quod vis)" The jift of it is that our fulfillment of the law is only possible because of God's Grace. I read it in the treatise "On the Forgiveness of Sin, and Baptism." But he coined the phrase, as it is believed, in his Confessions.

| Hi Dan. We are blessed to have you among us. I will keep you in my prayers this week and specifically ask our Lord to provide you with employment as needed. This is a couragous step in faith you are embarking upon. I pray you will find employment within the Catholic Church as we are much in need of men of God to build us up in the faith
