What you people who advised me to do this forgot to tell me was that burning = fire = flames of fire. Oh, sure, that might be obvious to some. But nooo, not to me. For a minute I was afraid my kitchen curtains were going to catch on fire
I was trying to do it all reverent like while the kids were otherwise occupied then these huge (ok, maybe huge is a slight overstatement, but they were big) flames started popping out of the ovenproof glass container I was using. That's when I started to get worried.
Then the smoke detectors started going off. Of course. One of them kept beeping off freakin' day even after the smoke cleared. Thank you very much. My kids come out and ask if everything is ok. Oh, sure, sure. Just starting a little fire here in the kitchen 'cause I was cold, nothing to be alarmed over {rolls eyes}
I left my little misadventure out when dh asked my about my day (thankfully so did the kids, and I didn't have to bribe them or anything ). But later on around bedtime we got a glass of water and said "something stinks out here". Yeah, could've possible been the fire from earlier in the day. I just acted like I didn't here him, though. That covers a multitude of sins.

As soon as the snow clears dd and I will take them to my grandparents graves.

Ali, when you cut a branch from a plant, dry it for a year, and then set it on fire, it will BURN. Big flames! Scortch-marks-on-the-ceiling flames!
Next year you'll know.
Now for a totally unrelated question that has absolutely nothing to do with this incident, since that would be insensitive and politically incorrect:
You wouldn't happen to be a blonde, by any chance, would you?

Now you tell me!
And -- Yes, thank you, I will be more prepared next year. Thanks for the tip.

Remind me never to mention the year I smoked everyone out of church on Holy Saturday lighting the "new fire".....
It was a good thing as we discovered the smoke detectors didn't work (he says convincingly...).
Besides, it wasn't my idea to light the fire inside (he says innocently...)!
