I now understand the meaning of the term “Cafeteria Catholics”.

PS… Do converts really make the best zealots?? :)

Grace to you Robert.  Aren't Cafeteria Catholics simply practicing Protestants sporting a crucifix?  Seems to me if you stray from the very basic belief of the Catholic Church which is the Eucharist and all it entails, then you have acted with a Protestant mind.  I otta know.  I are a Protestant.

But, if it is true, and I'm swiftly coming to that point that Jesus Christ is present Spirit, Body and Soul in the Eucharist as Mother Church teaches it, then there isn't a hair to stand on when someone says that it doesn't matter whether you are Protestant or Catholic in partaking of the Eucharist.  If/when, I finally cross the Tiber, it will be to complete my salvation at the foot of the cross in the Eucharist.  You can bet your sweet patooty that I'll shout it from the housetops.  Yes, we make good zealots, because the circle has been made complete.  We understand now what a close personal relationshipship with Jesus is and how that relationship interacts with his body and the world.  To seal that relationship with the Eucharist would be literally heaven on earth.

Of course...I'm not there yet. :dude:  But I'm close.  Lord help thou my unbelief.

Rich

I should take a moment and clear up an apparent misconception. The new priest did not cancel future retreats. He has informed the community that Eucharist will not be given to non Catholics at these retreats. Since there is no pre-retreat screening process for retreatants, the solution to the issue remains unclear. We are still going ahead with our springs retreat, awaiting further direction from clergy.

Our Bishop is the one who gave the direction for the current practices to change at daily retreat Mass, just before he left for a new Diocese, leaving the repercussions of his direction for others to implement, though it had been going on for years before he left. We are without a Bishop for the foreseeable future.

The issue really is lay Retreat Directors may be required to instruct non Catholics on retreat that Eucharist is for Catholics only, but non Catholic retreat members are encouraged to come forward for a blessing. The other issue is that a third of “Team”, meaning the lay men putting on the retreat, are non Catholics, and may be asked to receive a blessing, not Eucharist also. As you can imagine, they are quite upset with the change, as are many of their Catholic Brothers in Christ.

With Grace For Us All,

Robert

Is there no way they could have their own communion service, separate from the Mass?  Or would that seem too divisive?  I s'pose it could.  No easy answer...

I cannot remember the name of it, just now, however, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, there is a church which has both a Catholic Congregation and an Episcopalian Congregation with two altars side by side. Never been there but I read that they have a joint service with two Priests, a Catholic Priest and an Episcopalian Priest somehow jointly doing a Protestant and Catholic Mass. The Catholic Diocese of Richmond and Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia entered into this arrangement as an experiment several years ago.  Not sure how it is working out.

It sounds like a disaster to me.  I'd be curious to find out more about it.

And now that I'm Catholic, I feel the same way.  Enthused, that is!!   I'm involved in this Bible study at my parish.  Last week, I brought the 6 copies I have of Steve Ray's conversion testimony on CD - one of the most fun, emotional ones I've heard - and passed them out to whomever wanted to listen.  My hope and prayer is that his story and others like it will give cradle Catholics a newfound appreciation of the precious gift that they've had all their lives.

 Amen, Jill~

I just watched Patrick Madrid, Search & Rescue (great show!) and he said we all make excuses, but if God didn't accept the excuses of say...MOSES...then he's not going to accept ours.  He said we have many "Aarons" to help us as we get started sharing our love for the Catholic faith, and becoming apostles.  c.d's and dvd's and books and EWTN and Catholic Radio...it's so wonderful!  The plethora of great Catholic websites, like Dave's http://www.socrates58.blogspot.com for instance!  :D

Anyway, I just wanted to toss my two cents in, too, and encourage all cradle Catholics and converts to UNITE, and LIVE THE MASS right there in the workplace and with your email list and circle of friends, not "in yer face" but just with your wonderful enthusiasm and joy at BEING CATHOLIC!  It's truly the best and I marvel everyday that I was by God's grace finally "open" and receptive to his grace 3 years ago and SAW for the first time, what I for some reason couldn't see 27 years earlier.  The TRUTH of the Catholic Church!  JESUS...built HIS CHURCH, and his Church will NEVER fail, NEVER fall into corruption, no matter how hard the gates of Hell may push.  God bless!

Converted to the core,

PP
