Earlier, after watching the University of Tennessee "Volunteers" defeat the University of Memphis in men's basketball ("YEEEEEEHAW!!!!" ), I turned on EWTN where I saw Marcus on "Journey Home" (has he shaved his beard or was that an old program?). Watching for a while, I heard him mention that he had been a Presbyterian Minister before he became a Catholic. For some reason, I had it in my head that he had been a Methodist! Oh well! Is Marcus a Deacon, in the Catholic Church, nowadays, or is he considered to be a layperson? Just wondering - I think highly of him no matter what his status. And that brings me to a question. Wonder what happens with when people who have been ordained Ministers/Priests in other denominations become converts to the Catholic Church. does the Church simply regard them as laypersons or do they have a different status? If someone who was an ordained Minister/Priest in another denomination wants to become a Catholic Priest, what must they do? And I apologize if there is some other thread, on the forums, dealing with these matters. Right now, I just don't have the time to go back to sort through all the threads, however, I would be grateful for any appropriate referrals. Thanks.

Minster converts are lay people like everybody else because their not having been properly ordained.
That was an older program, PFH, pre-facial hair.

They are lay people although, due to their education and experience, they could conceivably be "short-tracked" to the diaconate if they chose to pursue that vocation. Each bishop sets his own requirements for ministries in his diocese. He also might be considered favorably for secular employment by the diocese or by a parish due to his education and experience.
However, aside from practical considerations that would be given to anyone with a particular education or level of experience, there is no special designation for former clergy of another faith (except Orthodox).

There is the Anglican/Episcopal exception which I believe is being investigated for use by others. I know I have seen discussion on it, but certain of where.

There is a defined Pastoral Provision for Anglican/Episcopal priests. That provision comes right from the Vatican and is well known.
There is a newer different set of criteria for ministers of other "ecclesial communites" like Protestant churches.

| Just wanted to put my "2 sense" in and remark that Marcus is a layperson, not a deacon.

SAY WHAT?!?! You mean Marcus is HUMAN too?!?! Seriously, no big deal. I wasn't shocked or anything(sometimes I express questions in what I hope will be an entertaining way). I was just curious. When I saw the program the other night, I heard Marcus say something about having been a Presbyterian Minister. For some odd reason, I had somehow gotten the idea that he had been a Methodist Minister. I was just trying to correct my knowlege of the good Marcus whom I do respect and admire. I also happened to think of a question I had been wondering about regarding how the Catholic Church regards people who had been Ministers (ordained, in other words) in other denominations. I was grateful for the replies.

And here I thought that Marcus was actually one of the Archangels! Seriously, as I mentioned to Connie, I was just curious and certainly respect and admire Marcus. Who knows? Perhaps some future Pope will designate him as one of the "Blesseds"!

Well I wouldn't go that far......
[I guess we should all strive for that level of holiness, be we the host of a world wide television program [Marcus], or an unwashed heathen [myself].]
