Please be aware that there is a weekly CHNI chat: now at 9-11 PM EST on WEDNESDAY nights. You simply enter our own chat room and comment away. I serve as moderator and try (without quenching the spontaneity) to keep the discussion about theology and spirituality, though individual topics are rather freely brought up by those present. There are no quizzes or homework. No one is put on the spot. You don't have to "say" one word if you don't want to. No "dumb" questions. Etc.

It is social and personal (and fun), just as the forum is, while it remains focused on the teaching of the Church and particularly the aid of new and potential Catholic converts, in accordance with the mission of CHNI. Sometimes I (or others) will post URLs to some page or paper that can assist someone in a particular question.

I have been thinking about possibly setting up further chats during the morning and afternoon of other days (probably an hour long, but longer if there is a lot of activity). Before that happens, I'd like to hear a lot of feedback about what days and times are best (especially if you would commit to frequently attend on the days you recommend!). I'm all for having more of a good thing, but there has to be a certain number of people for it to best function (if I sit in there by myself for an hour -- like the priest in Eleanor Rigby -- , that's a pretty lousy use of my time :) ).

We usually average about 7-10 people, which is a good number for this sort of thing, but pretty small, considering that our membership is about 660 at present (and these are mostly regulars who come every or almost every week). It's a great group now. If you come by (yeah, YOU!), too, it'll be even better.

Please come join us, and offer your suggestions about possible further regular chats (best days and times). Chats are for you: to help you (as a new or potential Catholic) better understand Church teaching and to be more comfortable in the Catholic Church, by knowing more about it.

See also an older thread about the chat room (some of the information, though, may no longer apply).

I may be late, Light Weigh Program on Monday evenings, but I'll be there Dave. (I record the Journey Home for later viewing!)

I always had choir practice Wednesdays and it was a bummer to miss the chat!

I have one question, as a chatting newbie, do our comments go away after the chat or can they be read later? I do not want to post too much detail about my husband's job search unless I know that it won't resurface later on.

Thanks,

Lisa

Hi Lisa,

Great! :D I hope to see you there, then.

do our comments go away after the chat or can they be read later?

They're not preserved anywhere publicly, no. No need to worry.

Morning Dave!

If you choose to do chats during the day M-F I would probably be able to participate in them.  I've always wanted to come to the chats but I try to keep nights for family time, plus 9-11 is a little late for "Miss I need my sleep" ;)

Hope you do the earlier chats!

Cool, Kim! Look forward to interacting with your enthusiastic self!

Mary Clare,

I'd like to do morning chats, as I stated, but I've gotten very little feedback, which I'd like to see before making a firm decision. The problem is that if I set it up, then I am committed to being there, but if no one shows, I'm just sitting around wasting my time  I suppose I could listen to a symphony or something, but that hardly advances the CHNI mission, and I still have to keep watching for someone to show, which just doesn't cut it! I want more active, lively chats, that everyone can better enjoy and benefit from.

So I need to see more definite feedback and stated commitments to attending at least some of the time (thanks for yours). I'd also like to see more participation in the nighttime chat, which is why I moved it. So far it looks like we have a couple of folks for whom Wednesday was not the best night. The nighttime chats have been pretty good, I think, so it'd be even better to have more people come and enjoy them, as we regulars have been doing.

C'mon everybody; don't be shy! :embarrassed:

I've never actualyl been to a chat, due to random flukes and whatnot, but in theory, any night other than Friday or Saturday at that timeframe is usually good. Mornings and day time on weekdays is bad for us younger people, however. hoepfully, I'll be on for at least part of tonight.

You know, the chat room is open 24/7, so there's no reason you can't do an earlier chat.  You don't need Dave!

The challenge is issued!!!!!

I still haven't seen you in a kilt, so I withhold judgment.

But there's no reason our ave_girl can't hold a separate chat for young people, and the other moderators can't host chats at other times for those who can't be here on Monday evening.  I've had a big problem with evenings lately as that's been the only time I've had to catch up on the forum and with forum maintenance, so a weekend chat would probably be better for me, like maybe on a Saturday evening.  I imagine we have some parents who would be better with a daytime chat, and those on the west coast certainly could do with something later.  8-11 EDT is 7-9 PDT, and that's prime family time for feeding the kids and doing homework.  We've picked up more international members, too, and 9-11 EDT is the middle of the night in Europe and the middle of the workday in Australia.  And based on the schedule she just posted for next semester, Kayla needs 3-5 AM!

By the way, I've said more than once that I'm all for additional chats at different times, but I want to see more interest expressed and some commitment first, because I want to avoid having to sit in a room for an hour with no one there, or just one or two. It needs more people and participation to be fruitful.

Maybe Mary Clare could try to set up a daytime one and see what happens? Just a suggestion . . . if it works, I'd be happy to participate, too.

I agree, but it also takes time to grow.  I haven't been able to make it for awhile.  Does the software still "announce" the arrival of a new visitor?  If so, you could still be working on something else while "monitoring" the chat room and if someone arrived, you could pop in and greet them and see what's on their mind.  That's what Deb and I did for the first few chats we had over at ECatholic, before we set up our own room.

I tried to watch the room last evening by listening for the "welcome" over the  spearkers. It did not work so I missed folks who came and went while I was reading my email.

Maybe we can get the announce function back if we ever get the full version up and running again.

Dunno. I've never used the audio function. But maybe not with the cheap free version that we have now.

We still need more participation, because it is a group discussion. The more people the better because all can benefit from the discussion and sharing. It's a better use of time.

My opinion is: we have over 600 members. If folks are truly interested in live chat, there should be more than enough participants out of that number. But if very few show, then there is obviously not enough interest, so why do it?

Whether daytime chats would be successful remains to be seen.

You're good for the second half of our Monday chat then (9-11 PM EST or 7-9 MST).

Now that I've noticed and read the announcement, I'll be able to make a Monday night much more easily since Wednesday is a choir night, unless its summer.

No promises from me that I'll stay on-topic. I'm a cheap date always looking for a way to get a laugh.

Glad you liked it, Howard, and I'm happy to see that you can visit more often, Tina. Both of you are great participants. It was a rather free-wheeling discussion last night. The funny thing, too, was that I sat there all alone for the first 38 minutes. Then folks started showing up and it was off to the dog races! We had some real "talkers" and a few new "faces" again, including two who had just joined the forum yesterday.

It's a fun, social, hopefully educational time. I strongly encourage more people to stop by. We usually average about 8-10 people at any given time; some leave, some arrive. But it keeps movin' along. No quizzes or "dumb questions"; no one is ever put on the spot or made to feel like an outsider. We just enjoy the fellowship and learning that takes place.

It's really quite informal, and I wonder if "moderator" even accurately describes what I do in these chats.  But I try to gently steer and guide the discussion a little bit and answer a few questions.
