I thought I might share my course schedule for next semester, since I know all of you are just soooo interested in my life! Lol. And we just got done registering.
Greek 101: This should be good, and I think it will play an important role in my future as I pursue theology.
Philosophy 211 From Cosmos to Citizens (Honors): An investigation of ancient, medieval, modern and contemporary responses to questions concerning the nature of the human reality, the nature and limits of human knowing, human freedom, human happiness or well-being, and the relation of the individual to society.
*This is a required course for my school, but it plays into my philosophy major quite nicely. A good part of the course will be review for me due to other classes I've already taken.
Theology 200 Foundations of Christian Thought (Honors): An investigation of the nature, sources and methods of Christian theology, with attention to classical and contemporary problems.
*Should be an okay course, although probably a lot of review. I managed to get the ONLY good theology professor in the department and it counts towards my theology major.
Philosophy 311 Ancient Philosophy: An investigation of the development of Western philosophy from the Pre- Socratic period through Plato and Aristotle to Neo-Platonism.
*I'm really excited for this class as I'm really interested in Aristotle. Plus, it works for my major.
Theology 390 Clerics and Consecrated Life: This course will deal with about half of the documents of the Second Vatican Council. The purpose of the course is to provide an opportunity to read these documents carefully and to discuss them. The only textbook will be: Vatican Council II: The Conciliar and Postconciliar Documents, ed. Austin Flannery, O.P.
*To be completely honest, the title of the course threw me off and I had not planned on taking this course. Then, when I couldn't get into the science class I needed, I decided to check it out. Now I'm really excited because I think this will be EXTREMELY beneficial to my pursuit of theology. It's apparentally a seminary course and it will count as an elective towards my theology degree.
I do find it slightly amusing that all of my courses are geared towards philosophy and theology: but hey, why not? It's what I'm going to do. Might as well. But I'm excited for most of these. It'll be good. Granted, I think I just sold my soul away... or my life, at any rate. Two honors courses and two 300-level courses, plus a foreign language... Ay de mi.

Well, softball isn't 100% for next year: there's a lot to discern in that direction. Due to some political issues, it might be time for me to hang up the cleats, so to say. It's a difficult situation, but no decision is going to be made until the end of the season.
But, I will be busy with quite a few things next year. I'm an editor on the Philosophical/Theology Journal called "Tolle Lege" now. I'll be teaching a small group called "Why Catholic?", plus working with the Philosophical club and the Militia Immaculata. And if I decide not to play softball, I will most certainly also be getting a job on campus. And I will definitely be playing in all sorts of intramural sports, lol.
Yay for business. It's all good stuff, though, really. And I work best when busy, stressed, and under pressure. Give me too much time and I'll get nothing done. Press me for time, you'll have excellent work.

Grisez is definitely a class act. Solidly orthodox. He is well known in moral theology circles. The Way of the Lord Jesus is probably his most famous work.

Seems to me that she should also cram in some Latin there, maybe some Advanced Calculus as well! Seriously, that schedule makes my brain hurt, ha, ha! The Greek reminds me of what my brother did while he was taking a class in his church. The instructor wrote something on the blackboard in Koine Greek and asked the class, "Now does anybody know what this says?" My brother, smiling, raised his hand and cracked, "It's GREEK to me!" [an old, humorous phrase meaning that one has no idea, ha, ha] Oh well! Certainly we will all PRAY for you! No doubt you'll do well! As for athletics, how 'bout LaCrosse?!

Hmm, yes, Latin... perhaps I could sit-in on that course. J/k!
Luckily I'll never have to touch that Calculus stuff again, as I took advanced Calculus my senior year of high school. Don't get me wrong-- I love math, but I'm glad to be done with it. Actually, I do miss the mental stimulation, although I think this overload on philosophy and theology will give me just as much.
Ya know, I've never seen a LaCrosse game. Some of those sports just never carried over to the west coast.

Maybe we need to start threads on rugby, Australian-rules football, and cricket, to help Kayla make up her mind. I'm pushing for curling.

Haha! I think I would really enjoy rowing-- my body is almost perfect for it.
If I don't play softball, (which sadly, appears very much to be the case-- it's a very hard situation for me right now) I do look forward to playing volleyball, basketball, and soccer again. Unfortunately, due to the demands of playing so competively with softball, I've had to give up all other sports. I would love to play "for fun"-- competitively, of course, but for fun again. I also thing that I'd love to try women's rugby; I could be awesome at that, me thinks.

The closest we ever got to Lacrosse down here in Cajun country is in the Jim Haslett era, when the Saints held their training camp in Lacrosse, WI. Here, if it ain't football, fishing, or hunting, it don't count. Of course, the Lady Tigers, the Hornets, the Zephyrs, the VooDoo and the ShellShockers are stirring up a few nests of interest!!
Just think, Kayla, if you had decided to play at LSU, you'd be right in the middle of crawfish season!

Motherly advice (unsolicited): Do consider also a sport that's easy to play once you graduate, one that doesn't require a big team and a lot of equipment and space. Golf, tennis, etc. Tennis used to be really popular, but not so much now, but what a great sport. Grab a friend and find a public court and bat some balls around and then go out for lunch! Lovely. (Do I play? No. I don't know anyone who does!)
Rugby. I played inside center for UC San Diego - a million years ago..... Fun sport, but inclined to injury. I remember going to a big tournament at UC Santa Barbara. Dozens of mens and womens teams... Someone broke my nose, or cracked it anyway, and they took me to the emergency room. EVERY room had a kid wearing a broadly striped two-color, rubber-buttoned jersey and cleats sitting on the exam table. One guy on our men's team almost died. An artery in his face got ruptured. I think it's because Americans play rugby like they play football, but there's no padding. Duh!!!

Theological advice (unsolicited!): As a theology professor, I have to say, I am thrilled with your schedule! Wonderful stuff coming up for you next semester. What a blessing to be called to the life of careful study. Cherish it!
Let me add two brief comments: 1) Even if a class repeats previously learned material, that's okay! Ground yourself in the basics and master them. This can only happen through repitition. You will find yourself asking new and deeper questions than you did the first time around. In fact, you can be a model to other students of being dedicated to the basics even when you think you know this stuff. And you can give yourself the task of helping other students work their way through the material for the first time. You'll be better prepared to come alongside others and give them aid...thereby showing you are not a Wrecker (you've read The Confessions, yes?)! And 2) Pray! As Thomas Keating once wrote, "The chief act of the will is not effort but consent." Yes, do work hard, but first pray and consent to God's working and moving in your life as you read and study, especially as you go through the documents of the Second Vatican Council.
Blessings to you in your studies!
BD
