Alligator Blood May Lead to Powerful New Antibiotics
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2008/04/080407-alligator-blood.html
Chemists in Louisiana found that blood from the American alligator can successfully destroy 23 strains of bacteria, including strains known to be resistant to antibiotics.
They're gonna be comin' around to bleed him soon!

As one who is not partial to reptiles, I shrug, sigh and say - wouldn't you just know something like that would come from reptiles?! EWWWWW!!! I heard tell that scientists are working on a new blood sugar control medicine from LIZARD SPIT!! EWWWW!!! SHUDDER!!!
This reminds me of a joke I heard told by that TV guy called "The Cajun Chef". He said that two ol' Cajuns were talking and one says, "Hey, let's go fishin' down in the swamp!" The other Cajun says, "AWWW NOOO!!! Ain't goin' fishin' down in the swamp! Too many snakes down there!!" Other Cajun says, "Awww, SHAW, ain't snake one down in the swamp!" Other Cajun says, "Whutchoo talkin' 'bout ain't no snakes down in the swamp?" Other Cajun says, "Nawww! Ain't no snakes down in the swamp! All de alligators down there done et 'em all up!!"

We do not have a pet alligator in the back yard.
He lives in the bayou across the street from my front yard, and he is not a pet. He is a neighbor. We don't bother him, and he keeps the nutria population down.
However, as a good neighbor, I have no doubt that if I ask him nicely, he wouldn't mind visiting a few of the more boisterous members of the forum. At the moment, he as his heart set on women wearing orange, but I keep reminding him that would be unsportsmanlike. And given the swollen nature of the Mississippi, it would be a difficult swim. Difficult, but not impossible, so keep that in mind. After his winter nap and his spring feed, he might well be interested in taking a little vacation upriver.
When I received the email version of these message, Google gave me a link to a "Cajun style swamp tour". I couldn't help but wonder if that is anything like "Canadian style bacon. It ain't Canadian and it ain't bacon! So maybe a "Cajun style swamp tour" takes place in Ohio or Tennessee, where (it's plain to see) the hillbilliies can't even type a Cajun accent!

I have very non PC views on alligators. I think they should have kept hunting them and eradicated them. I mean, they were so close. Why stop? I just don't do reptiles.
I tolerate turtles. I learned to tolerate lizards when I lived in Italy. I don't do snakes or gators.

Definitely unsportsmanlike. Ungallant too. Southern gentleman do not threaten ladies with alligators.
You can't possibly be referring to me because:
1. I offered to sing the LSU song, but you didn't teach it to me.
2. I would have been a little disappointed if UT had lost, but I would have rooted for LSU against Stanford.
3. My mother's from New Orleans, and she roots for LSU. (She attended Loyola.)
4. I don't wear orange. It's just not my color. Mama always taught me to wear colors that make me look nicer. Orange doesn't do that. I won't even wear orange ribbons (though I might consider orange socks )
5. Your friendly neighborhood gator would have to swim the Mississippi and cross the Appalachian Mountains to reach me. That's a long haul for a stubby legged long nosed creature that would look better as a purse and shoes (Would it accessorize with my orange socks? )
6. I'm not boisterous. I was raised to be quiet and ladylike in public and never draw attention to myself. I only sing the UT song at home and on this forum.

Good thing I didn't have to give my address when I registered on the forum!

Alligator hunting has resumed, although it is tightly controlled. Alligators are necessary for the ecosystem as they eat all sorts of small nuisance critters like nutria. In fact, if Australia had more swampland for their crocodiles, they probably wouldn't have such a bad problem with rabbits.
Nutria are not native to Louisiana, so they have no natural predators, and they cause severe damage to, among other things, levees. Alligators find them quite tasty, so they do help to keep the population down. Otherwise, the police use them for target practice, which drives PETA absolutely bonkers. But if something isn't done to keep the population in check, they will quite literally breed until our ecosystem is destroyed. They eat roots which they have to dig up, and that damages farm crops, wetlands, estuaries, and levees, too.
In case anyone doesn't know, a nutria is essentially a rat the size of a small dog or a large house cat.

Well, as long as the alligators also eat up all the snakes, they are OK with me! And I is nowadays an eastern Virginia hillbilly, I'll have you know! Livin' here amonst all these here Virginia "Wahoos" a/k/a "Cavaliers an' these here Virginia Tech "Hokies" an' these here University of Richmond "Spiders"! By the way, if you like, you can send your 'gator over to Kansas where he can feast on some Jayhawks after they beat the University of Memphis Tigers!

Thank God they did! And you can take that from a guy who's seen the carnage to a basketball program left behind by John "Coach Cal" Calipari.
We have long memories up here at UMass/Amherst territory. And, when it comes to "Coach Cal" we Minutemen won't release them from our
"cold dead fingers". But that Jayhawk victory might've loosend a few.

"Canadian style bacon. It ain't Canadian and it ain't bacon
In Canada we call it either back bacon or peameal bacon (due to being rolled in cornmeal). I love it and can't get it down here.
I just don't do reptiles. I tolerate turtles
After last night I don't tolerate turtles- at not if they are my tortoises! We were just sitting down to a hot meal last night when our son came in from feeding the goats and said that he couldn't find either tortoise (they are around 14 inch around and stand about 6 inches or so high) so out we all troop to look for them. They have a 15 x15 foot enclosure but in the spring they get frisky- they can walk 3 miles a day. We FINALLY found those suckers at oposite ends of the acre- one had climbed into an empty kitty litter bucket for the night and was stuck. that is how wide they are We went in to a cold dinner. I will be glad when they settle down for the summer.
