In the Richmond newspaper, I read that the Washington, DC Metro system (their subway) had an ad, recently, which featured a bobblehead of the Pope, incorrectly dresssed as a Cardinal (their mistake), and which said "avoid unholy traffic, take the Metro to the Papal Mass" or some such text. Apparently they were quietly contacted by the Catholic Bishops and asked to remove the ad which they did. I cannot imagine any advertising person having the bad taste to come up with such an ad, however, I guess I should not be surprised by much of anything that happens in the media world these days. Of course, had they resisted pulling the ad, I would have been complaining to them when I found out about it. And I can imagine what would have happened if they had done such an ad about certain other non-Christian religious leaders! Oh well! I am at least glad that the ad was stopped! And, while I am glad that many people will be greeting the Pope, in Washington and New York, I daresay that the traffic WILL be "unholy"! In their weekly "Wings" email, EWTN assures us that they will be covering the Pope's visit extensively on the air so I will watch comfortably from my living room! Oh, by the way, Build a Bear Workshop, in this region, has little bears with nice little t-shirts which appropriately commemorate the Pope's visit. I think that those are cute and appropriate! Apparently a portion of the cost goes to help pay for the Pope's visit to the United States. Last edited on Fri Apr 11th, 2008 06:23 am by EMarshallBuckles

Marshall,
Having huge crowds fighting traffic and the crowds in public transportation is in one way a good thing since there are so many that are interested enough to be a part of the Pope's visit.
I can remember when I was in high school (Rice HS) that Pope Paul VI came to visit NYC and actually stopped the motorcade in Harlem where my school was located and where we were lined up along the street with a large banner, to hand a letter the Pope personally written to the students at our school. (This was in response to a request from our school to the Vatican to please stop to recognize the poor in Harlem in the same way that he recocognized the poor in India). A copy of it is exhibited in our year book from 1966.
This made the headlines in NYC newspapers and the national news. What is amazing is that he was asking to pray for the Vatican Council which was in session at the time (October 4, 1965). Little did we know back then the effect that Council had on the Church throughout the world.
May your learning about the CC continue to prove fruitful.
God Bless,
Bill

That's cute. If we were mall shoppers, which I can assure you we are not We might have to pop into BAB and get one.

I know the DC-area Metro is offering a special commemorative pass during the pope's visit, featuring the papal seal. Such items are licenses and help to pay the expenses of the trip. However, it is important that they be in good taste.
I'm not sure how I feel about a bobblehead, but I do think an impersonation of the pope complaining of "unholy traffic" is not appropriate.
No doubt there will be unlicensed knockoffs, too, which should of course be avoided.

When you post a complete URL, the forum software automatically makes a hyperlink out of it. Just make sure you end the line with a space. If you put a period, close parenthesis, quote, or any other character at the end of the line, it will be added to the hyperink and it won't work!
