I have been watching the events of the passed day or so of the Pope's visit to the U.S.  I am struck by several things .... first of all, the TV station I watch (FOX News Channel) is showing everything ... right now the Pope is celebrating Mass, and they are broadcasting it all.  In today's world, I find that pretty awesome.  Secondly, this man of God carries a huge burden ... absolutely it is a distinct position which he holds and in which he serves, but the burden of this seems almost impossible to bear without the strength of Christ and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.  And, lastly, the absolute, unbridled enthusiasm of the crowds of people who greet him.  When was the last time we witnessed this for anyone in this country, with the exception of a sports hero or team (sad commentary, isn't it?).  These folks who have come to be part of this monumental event in history are connected - one with each other, one with Christ, and one with the original church.
Just the observations of an outsider.

Hi there ... you and I seem to be in about the same place, EB ... been involved in several denominations and now sort of learning about RC.   If I ever felt led, and was sure of it, to actually become part of the RC Church, well ... to say my kids, their spouses and all my friends would pass out is an understatement.  They're all solidly evangelical/charismatic .... I "strayed" enough 5 years ago by joining a Lutheran Body.  It's amazing how God works.

:waving:Yes, ma'am, apparently we are in a similar situation.  All during the late '70s, '80s, '90s and early 2000s, I have been sort of a weird combination of Baptist and Anglican, I guess you'd say.  However, although always having a very high regard for the Roman Catholic Church and regarding Pope John Paul II as a personal "hero of the faith" (I regard him as "the Great"), even so, somehow I never would have imagined myself here, in the late first decade of the milenium (hope I spelled that correctly - I usually make some sort of typo with my posts, ha, ha), posting on a Catholic forum and getting much more involved with, much closer to the Catholic Church than I was in the past.  And, like you, if I ever went over into the Catholic Church, I would cause a number of people to be in "slack jawed shock and awe", ha, ha!   :eyeroll:  Although my last name comes from a place in England called "Buck Hill" (slurred, over the years, in typical English fashion), sometimes I have wondered if God may have some sort of mission for me to somehow "buckle" the Catholic world and protestant world together.  However, if He does, He has not made that plain to me, I have just wondered.  His plans for me are probably nothing as grand as that, ha, ha!  I also recently humorously told some of our fellow posters that I would believe that God wants me to go ahead and become a Catholic if Pope Benedict XVI was to somehow come up to me and, in his German accent, say to me "Marshall, you SHOULD become a Catholic!"  Of course, I daresay that is NOT going to ever happen although, still, I have sort of nervously looked over my shoulder at times, the past couple of days! I only live about 100 miles or so from Washington, DC, ha, ha!   Anyway, I am glad that you post here, Abby, and hope that you will continue to do so!  May God bless you!  :)

Interesting that you say all this EMB ... I'm actually closer to D.C. than you are - only about 45-50 miles.  And, I used to live right on the borders of D.C.  I have had a few people cross my path during my lifetime - a friend when I was young and a dear neighbor who walked to Mass daily while I was growing up.  I was fascinated by their commitment.  Now, my Christian Psychologist and his wife have converted to Catholicism after being Evangelicals all their life, so that has really got me looking and wondering, and reading even more prolificly, if that's possible.   I don't know what God may have ahead for me .... but if it's anything like I sense .... well, He'd hopefully prepare my kids and close friends for the shock of their lives.

*Grumbling*

Didn't... get... to... go...  Could've.  Had the opportunity for a ticket.  Darn softball.

But, it was awesome watching the Papal Mass on tv.  Eight of our D.C. semanarians got to serve during the Mass, so seeing them on tv that close to Pope Benedict was awesome!  I knew the Cross Bearer and the one who held the book.  I also saw my softball chaplain, a deacon, when he was shown distributing Holy Communion.  It was all very cool.

The last time Pope John Paul II came to America.  And each of the papal visits before.

The remarkable thing is that a large portion of the adoring crowds are not even Catholic.

I watched "Papa" (can I call him that yet? I have a strong urge to) yesterday as he was being given gifts from different people of other religions who were in agreement that seeking peace for the world was important, and I was taken with the fact that Papa didn't deny that peace can come without Christ. It was a very gentle service, and I'm sure there were more than a few bulldoggish Protestants (I used to be one) who thought he was being anti-christ-like by even acknowledging the other religions' attempts to bring peace because it wasn't through Christ. But what I saw was an attempt by B16 to bring Christ gently into their picture and show them His love in a tender fashion.
