It has been in the news again so I will tell you all about this in case you hear about it. In Louisa County, Virginia, there was a Priest who was over two Catholic Churches there. A Father Rodis was from the Phillipines. He seemed to be doing a good job as far as anybody knew. What he had not told anyone was that apparently he had gotten married, while over in the Phillipines. While acting as a Priest at the Lousia County churches (very rural churches) he had a house over in county located in the Diocese of Arlington (the churches are located in the Diocese of Richmond). He and his wife and their two children lived in the house. He did not tell any of his neighbors or anyone he knew socially that he was a Priest. Apparently people thought that he was in the export/import business. He started to embezzle funds from the churches and was sending the money over to the Phillipines where a relative was investing the money in real estate. Weeell, to make a long story short, Father Rodis finally got caught. He ended up facing Federal charges for which he was found guilty. Now he is up on charges of embezzling the money. He has started his prison term but will be taken to court to face the state charges. Last, but not least, the Diocese is taking steps to have him defrocked, he will no longer be a Priest.
Now, some people may point fingers and say, "Nanny, nanny boo- boo" about the Catholoic Church but they should NOT. I have known of things like this happening in other denominations ranging from the Episcopal Church to the Baptist denominations. Very sadly, it happens from time to time regarding sexual offenses, financial offenses and so forth. Like the Sciptures say, "the devil wanders around like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour." Sometimes Priests and Ministers fall prey as to those in secular life. What all churches and denominations, as well as lay people, need to do is to be constantly vigilent. You have to keep a watchful eye out and pray for guidance and protection as well. There is a lot more I could say about this, however, I will leave it at that. Anyway, again, if anybody hears about the above and points fingers at Catholics, tell them that your good friend and brother in Christ Marshall said that this has happened in many other Christian denominations and in non-Christian groups as well so don't be pointing fingers at my dear Catholic brothers and sisters. Meanwhile, I guess that we all need to pray for Father Rodis and for the churches which he evidently abused. I hear tell that the churches are healing but that, of course, this has been a hard time for them.

| It is priests that Satan tempts first. We need to pray for them every day. I say a chaplet of St. Michael every day for priests.

This story has been in the news here. Sadly, many of his parishioners feel betrayed; and prayers are needed for all in touched by this situation.
Satan hungers for souls, but especially those of priests and ministers. The fall of clergy brings scandal to the Church and causes others to fall away (or not come to Christ at all).
We must pray for our priests every day that they will be strengthened, and also pray for those who have fallen. It is better to have a millstone tied around your neck than to lead a little one astray.

| I'm very saddened about this news especially that the priest is a Filipino. But to tell you honestly, it is very rampant here in the Philippines where priests, mostly diocesan engaged with women. There are also those who have constructed expensive houses for their parents. Others have purchased the latest models of cars. I mean I suppose many knew about these, but they are afraid to tell or come out because the Catholics themselves shall condemn that person. Catholics here have high regard for priests that even if they knew that priest has extra-activities outside the church, they just shut up. Though we always have a prayer for the priests right before the final blessing in every mass, still we are experiencing these problems time after time. Please include us in your prayers. Thanks.

I thought, once a priest always a priest. A person might wind up without a parish, or in jail, or kicked out of a country but he was still a priest. Anybody know the straight scoop?

You are right, Cliff. A laicized priest agrees not to act as a priest or present himself as a priest, even though he is always sacramentally a priest. So it’s a matter of permission to perform priestly functions (“faculties,” we call it), not of no longer being a priest.
