Dear friends:
This is Ruth, the barely-dry new Catholic convert.
After Mass on Wednesday night, a lady who I greatly respect asked me if I would serve on the Formation Committee. After ascertaining that it met on a night that I have open, I said yes.
Now I'm thinking "What WERE you thinking, Ruth?!?"
So HELP!!
What does the "Formation Committee" do?
First meeting is this coming Tuesday.
When, oh when, will I learn to keep my big mouth shut?
Pax,
Ruth

I have been asked to serve on our Formation Committee and we have had our first meeting plus an individual meeting with our pastor. If I undestand Fr. correctly, he wants to increase the religious fervor and involvement of the parish membership. He wants to develop more prayer groups, study groups and intra-support groups and he wants the members of the FC to head up the various groups. While I think those activities are important, my current concern is reviewing the membership on proper procedures and respect for recieving the Holy Eucharist. However, we will do it Fr's. way and I will do what I can to help out.
I understand your comment on being a newbie. I have been a member for only 3 years and have already been involved in 5 ministries. It seems to me that there is a lot of work to do and a sever shortage of helpers so if you can help out in any of the ministries, committees or whatever, I am sure your help will be appreciated.

I wonder sometimes. When I converted my Hubby said now be careful what you say yes to.
12 years or so later - lead in confirmation classes, eucharistic minister, brown owl, district commissioner. OK so the last two are guiding not church strictly but closely related.

Well, it might well be different in different parishes, but "formation" is a general term we use for spiritual development. It would encompass religious education, scripture study, prayer services, and generally anything else that would strengthen the faith of the members of the parish.
As a former Protestant, they might well seek out and welcome your ideas and input. We Catholics have a lot of catching up to do with our Protestant friends in the area of faith formation. And if they wait a few years to invite you, you'll be too inculturated in Catholicism to be able to bring what you miss to the table.
Thanks for saying "yes".

Shall I be 100% honest here? LOL J/K, of course!
How cool you were asked, and good for you for saying "yes". Hmmmm, that reminds me of someone else that said "yes" to the Lord

Hi. I don't know if my post is relevant. In our organization in school we have the Formation Committee that caters the spiritual development of our members. We have retreats like (just want to share) Ministerial Retreat, Eucharistic Orientation Retreat, Youth Encounter, Para-Consecration Retreat and Ignatian Retreat, prayers sessions and consultations. I know it's quite different with your formation committee.

Well...I'm really not the one to pass judgment on whether anyone is crazy or not, especially when I've consumed as much sugar as I just did. >< But that sounds like a lot of fun! I know what you mean about too many ministries but God always seems to make the time and let you bow out if need be. He has this way of making a way you know?
Love and prayers in Christ.
