I have added a few new fields to the user profile, so I ask everyone to please update your profile at this time.

The changes include a request for your first name or nick name.  Many of our users have usernames which relate to scripture passages or personal journeys, some to hobbies, etc.  The overwhelming majority of our users include their first name in messages, so I'm not asking for something that you're unwilling to give.  By adding it to your profile, your preferred name will show on the left side of every message you post, so it will be easy for those of us with poor memories (meaning me) to remember the name by which you prefer to be called.

I also ask for your gender.  Many of our user names, and some first names and nick names, do not indicate whether we are male or female, so this information will also appear on the left side of every message you post.  Again, this is primarily for the benefit of those with faulty memories, meaning me.

You will also have to check a box agreeing to forum guidelines.  This field helps me to identify spammers and deal with them immediately, before they can polute the forum.  The problem is not huge but it is a constant battle.

In the Denomination field, I ask you to post a brief description of your denominational history.  For example, if you were originally Baptist but joined a Pentacostal church and then became Catholic, you could post "Baptist to Pentacostal to Catholic".  Lifetime Catholics could list "Cradle Catholic" and reverts could put "Lapsed Catholic Returning Home".  The reason I am asking you to do this is so others who find themselves on a similar path can identify those whose journey mirrors their own.

Finally, while not required, I would ask you to enter your location and date of birth.  The former is to help others locate people in their area on a similar journey to theirs.  Most of our posters have included location information in posted messages so I know it's not something you're not willing to give out; adding it to your profile allows use of the searching and sorting functions of the software to find others who live in their state/province and city.  With just your first name or nick name and city, you still can't be identified but if you're concerned about confidentiality, your country and state/province is good enough.

The reason I would like to see this information is simple.  Many people who find themselves interested in the Catholic Church have expressed discomfort in going to mass, especially for the first time, when they don't know anyone.  By adding your location, you might help someone to find you and ask if they can attend mass with you.  You might be able to help someone to understand Catholic worship.  The simple act of inviting them to attend mass with you might be the catalyst in helping them to better understand our faith.  The ultimate ministry of the Coming Home Network is to put people with people who can help on the journey, and adding our locations to our profiles is a step in that direction.

This information also helps me to identify real posters from spammers, especially for those users who have registered but choose not to post.  The majority of spammers have a certain pattern of information in their user record so they're pretty easy to pick out.

To add this information to your user record, click the "My Account" button at the top of the screen, then click the "Profile" tab.  While you're at it, also click on "Preferences" and try alternate themes.  I've increased the type style on the Default theme to make the forum easier to read for those of us with smaller monitors and aging eyes, and the other themes offer different color combinations that might be more pleasing for certain people.  There are other options available, too.  For example, under "Watched Topics" and "Watched Forums" you can have the system email you each message posted to a topic, or a daily digest of messages.

If you wish to update your information now, you can click this link and it will take you directly to your profile.

Thank you for your cooperation.

God's peace.  Yesterday I got kicked off the Anglican listserve (Virtue Online) that I had posted to for years after making a pro-Catholic statement, so I've updated my profile and moved my avatar from there to here.  I'll bet you can't guess what the avatar represents!  (Hint:  What did the current highly controversial Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church earn her doctorate in?)  Blessings, ~Br_Carlo~

Squidology? Oceanography, I give up:)

Hi Everyone! My name is BHTech and I too was booted off of Virtue Online for speaking about pro-Catholic issues to stubborn Anglicans.  I inadvertently got Br_Carlo booted off because I mentioned his name in my complaint to the moderator, which goes to show the anit-Catholic sentiment the moderator of the forum had.  Br_Carlo did not even complain and he got booted off, but he was guilty by association with me.

I am a recent convert to Catholicism from being a life long Anglican.  I am still enrolled in my 2 year RCIA class but one has to endure these things for the sake of the kingdom. Anyway just thought I would say hi to all and peace and God's blessings to each and everyone of you.

BHTech

NOTE TO ALL USERS:  Many of you have never updated your profile.  I am now using the gender field as a way to help trap spammers to make it easier to find and delete them.  Most of them never complete their registration, but I am deleting 10-20 a day prior to activation, so every shortcut I can think of to make them easier to identify is being taken.

The gender field became mandatory for all registrants shortly after the beginning of 2007.  Many users who registered in 2006 have never updated their profile to include gender.  I have waited as long as I can, but tonight I set all users who have never bothered to update their profile to "Male".  In looking over the user names, it seemed that most of the names belonged to men, but of course a lot of names are indeterminate.

I would ask you once again to update your profile by clicking the "My Account" button at the top of any page, and then clicking "Profile".  You will find a few other mandatory fields as well.  From here on out, any user who does not enter a gender or who leaves the gender field set at "Spammer" will be automatically deleted.

Thanks for your cooperation.

We're glad to have you here with us.  Are you a Biloxi native?  I will always have fond memories of Biloxi -- it's where we spent our honeymoon!  It's about a three hour drive from where I live, and I had trouble making it that far!

(I am, of course, referring to the heat.  We were married in June and our car was not air conditioned.)

I'm originally from Bridgeport, CT. There are a lot of transplants here in the South for various reasons, but my main reason is the people.

Paradoxically I did not like Biloxi when I moved here with the Air Force in 1987, but I returned in less than a year to establish my residence. I had to wait on retirement in May 1991 before I could relocate. I will not make this mistake again.

ICQ is the granddaddy of the Instant Messaging programs which you can find at icq.com.  It allows a "real-time" chat between two individuals, and also direct file sharing.

Other IM programs include Microsoft Messager, AIM by AOL, Google Chat, and Yahoo Chat.  There are others, as well.

The chat client I use is called Trillian by Cerulean Studios.  The advantage of Trillian is that it allows one to use multiple chat clients with a single program, instead of having to load a bunch of stuff into memory.
