Hi--

I'm having the hardest time with this website and I'm not sure why.  I've added to my 'approved websites' list or whatever that's called, I have made sure that I allowed popups on all of the chnetwork.org pages, yet almost everytime I move from one page to the next either to read or to post, I get the big error page to try back later because I've been disconnected.  At that point I always check my connection and it never shows a problem--it says it's with the website.:?  Is there something else I need to do?  I have already made sure that cookies are enabled.  It's just so odd that this is the only website of all the ones I visit each day...that is problematic like this.

Does anyone have any other ideas I can try?  It gets so frustrating to have to continually click on 'refresh', but then that doesn't work to get the page back either. I end up having to go to another website or my home page and try again later.

Thank you,

Cat

Same here. I am quite sure it is on the server/hosting side. So nothing can be done from our side.

Just try to remember to copy your posts to the clipboard before clicking "SEND."  I know that I and several others have lost our thoughts to the ether-world because of this (hopefully temporary) glitch.

Yep, it's universal experience. I'm trying to do my job and every 4th or 5th time I get that stupid "can't connect" screen. VERY frustrating . . .

Steve Smeltzer, the tech guy is currently working on it. Say a prayer! Rick has done what he could, too. I'm not a techie at all. I like very user-friendly stuff! :D

And yes, as Jill said, select and save everything before sending it. If it fails, you can try to go back (or forward) to another screen (keep trying), re-paste and try again. But SAVE everything!

Yeah, guys, this is an honest to goodness technical breakdown. And it’s the web host’s fault. Their server has been on the fritz for a while, and a little over a week ago it crashed the forum. Since then everything has been unstable. Due to the holidays, it’s taking more than just a couple of days.

I’ve been trying a number of possible methods to see what works best in keeping access going, but nothing works long term. When it gives the “Failed to Connect” message, the thing that seems to work most consistently is just to shut down your browser (or browse on some other website) for a minimum of 15 minutes. This clears the forum software’s memory of your presence and usually will allow you to connect again — until the next time it fails, which is usually just a matter of minutes.

The way I’ve been posting is that I copy the post I’m replying to off to my word processor and write my reply in my word processor. I shut off the browser meanwhile. When I’m ready to post, I bring up the forum, navigate to the thread, hit Reply, paste in my text, and Send.

David

Actually, given the number of new members, the posts should be much higher, and that's actually been part of the problem, because we have had difficulty demonstrating and locating a real problem.  And yes, it is a real problem with our web host.  It is not on the users end.  We are all experiencing it, and it has to be fixed on their end.  At this point, there is nothing you or I or CHNI can do to improve the situation.

Originally, the server problems were also causing cache problems with the forum software, so that was causing the forum to be completely shut down.  Once I figured that out I was able to correct that part of the problem, so now it's up most of the time.

I've been trying to troubleshoot the problem and I think I've narrowed it down to specifics.  Since I work for an ISP, I have the benefit of a direct link to the Internet backbone, which eliminates problems with my own ISP, browser problems, etc.  I'm also enough of a techy geek to be absolutely certain it's not user error, and am able to document it.  I'll be forwarding some into to Steve tonight or tomorrow that he can present to the web host to help isolate the problem.

I can tell you that rebooting your computer or restarting your router doesn't help.  Just hit "try again" over and over again until it goes through.  It might take five or ten minutes, but you probably won't lose your post if you do it that way.  Still, the Ctrl-A, Ctrl-C (to copy before you hit "Send") and Ctrl-V (to repost if you do lose your text) is the safest way to avoid having to redo the whole message.  Even better is to follow David's practice of composing your messages in another editor and then pasting them into the forum.

All I can say is we are truly grateful for your patience.

I hope someone is still working on that server!  I'm getting dropped left and right and my replies are not getting through.  Hope this does ... cross my fingers ...
