I have installed what's known as a "Captcha" modification.  This one comes from the Carnegie-Mellon Institute (one of the world's leading anti-virus, anti-spam research institutes) and it has passed all my tests, so I'm very confident it will work.

"Captcha" is the name given to those boxes that show you squiggly text you then have to type in.  This one has the benefit of reporting the IP addresses of login attempts back to the Institute so they can be tracked.  If a spambot unleashes a flood of registrations, it can be shut down immediately, so even if they can figure out the text, the registrations can still be blocked.

Another benefit is for the visually impaired.  It is possible to have a set of numbers read out loud to be typed in for those unable to read the text, so no uses should be denied entry based on a handicap.

There is still the possibility of a problem, so if any users attempt to register and have difficulty, please let me know.  Send an email to chnforum @ comcast dot net (deleting the spaces and substituting a period for the word dot) including all of the required information.

By the way, the server problems continue.  If you encounter one please copy the actual error message you receive and send it to me at the above address.

And finally, due to the server problems, the activation emails have not always been working.  If you send me email at the above address I can activate you manually but you must send me the user name you registered with!!!!!  If you don't, I cannot activate you.

Thanks for stopping by and helping to keep the forums a friendly place.

It shouldn't even be noticible to current members, but as you know, new registrants can read every area of the forum prior to their registration, so hopefully they'll notice the message and let me know if they have a problem.

Not sure if anyone else is having this problem, but ever since you added the spam blocker all the emails I get for threads I'm watching are going into my spam folder. If you have that problem, it should stop if you put the email address the forum uses to send you emails into your address book. Then it stops treating the emails as spam. Works that way on Yahoo, anyway.

I did also change the email address those messages are being sent from, since the prior address no longer exists.  Thanks for mentioning that.

Ah, I see. Well, all is well now.

Cliff, I did that, too. Not sure how other email systems are handling it, but glad it was easily fixed with Yahoo.

This morning, I tried to post something 3 times, send a PM, and unwatch a topic and got an error message every time.  But I was using Firefox.

When I switched to Internet Explorer, the post went right through.  If you're reading this, so did it.

Jill

I've had sporadic problems with SQL errors, but not directly related to the spam  blocker.  They were happening before.  If it recurs, please try to PM or email me the exact error message  you're getting so I can look into it.

Here's what it said when I tried to reply using Firefox.  I've had no problems with Firefox in the past.  This is new today.    (the formatting is all goofy, but the words are the same...

Jill, that's the server error we've been experiencing for the last couple of months.  It has been occurring more often lately, hopefully because they (the hosting company) are trying to fix it.  The only suggestion I can make is to copy (Ctrl-A, Ctrl-C) the text of your replies before you click Send.

When these errors start happening, the only thing I've found that helps is walking away from the computer or doing something else for a little while.  Then everything will work fine.

There has been a message I've gotten several times similar to Jill's, but it mentioned the name Steve or Steven in it, and something about maximum connections, I'm not sure of the wording.  The next time I get it I will write it down and report to you.

If you get error messages please send them to me in a PM or email.  Please don't post them publicly on the forum as they potentially could  contain confidential user information (email addresses, user names, etc.).  Some errors could give hackers information that would make it easier to break into the system, so plese don't post them publicly.

I am happy to report to you that after a whole week, three major milestones have been achieved:
  1. No spammers have logged in.  Nada.  Zip.  Zero.  None.  I realize this is not terribly significant to most of you since you never knew it was happening in the first place, but I have been dealing with 100-200 per week (sometimes more) for the last 18 months, so it means a whole lot to me!  I have deleted the almost 7000-name "banned email" list which quickens, simplifies, and reduces errors in the registration process as the user's email address no longer has to be compared to that huge list.
  2. Several new users have joined the forum.  That means it's working.
  3. Not a single problem has been reported.  There are still problems with the activation process caused by the server problems and by AOL, but those are nothing new.
So anyway, I just wanted to let you know...

I will not allow you to take this thread off-topic!  Begone, Evil Woman!

(Besides, I would never drink and drive.  I've never been to a drive up daiquiri stand.)

Yipes! I've incited the ire of the Gator Man!

Um, you drive home and drink it. They're on every corner, right? A short drive. :P

Technically, they're legal only if they're sealed, which means they put masking tape across the top and are very careful not to cover the straw hole.  Then they give you the straw.  Where you put it is your business.  Of course, if you actually insert the straw in the hole, it becomes illegal, but it was legal when they sold it to you.

Truly, I've never been to one.  The nearest one I know of is about 5 miles from my house, but I haven't really looked for anything closer.

And now you have not only taken the thread off topic, you've made me respond off-topic!  (I'm much too much of a gentleman to ignore your off-topic post.)

This, of course, must stop, or I will be forced to introduce you to my friend Amos Moses and let him show you what really happened to the Louisiana sheriff.
