Hi,
My name is Ken and after reading some of the posts here, I have decided to join this forum to seek spiritual support. I am currently attending USC studying business and web development but when I do get the chance, I indulge myself with Catholic theology and Church History because it facinates me, not to mention brings peace and joy to my soul.

USC in unfortunately a very secular school, not to mention liberal and many Christians here struggle to maintain their faith, especially Catholics. I myself have much difficulty finding peers who truely believe and practice the faith in faith and this has proved at times to be difficult for me to find the spiritual support when I need it. I do not seek to pass any judgement, but the student parish priest here and majority of other priests that I have met around the Campus area (and I've heard in most of the Los Angeles Archdioces) tend to be somewhat untraditional and sometimes even blatantly liberal and un-Catholic in their views. This of course, does not help me in my desire to know and to seek God.

I also live in a house with eight other boys here, all whom are Christians (the only such house that that exists at USC that we know of) and we do our best to support each other live faithful to Christ, but nevertheless they are all Protestants -specifically non-denominational- (several whom are lapsed-Catholics actually :(   ) and although I greatly appreciate their friendship and their acceptance of me in the little haven we have created here at our house, I feel that there is this invisible glass-floor which hinders my attempt to make deeper spritual frienship with these housemates because of our lack of congruency with basic docrinal beliefs.

I have come across too many Catholic-born students here who take their faith for granted and do not have much vigor in learning more about the faith, however, I have been pleasantly surprised to find out that those who have once left and returned to the Chruch, or who have converted to Catholoicism by seeking the truth, to be much more knowledgable, understanding, and supportive of my desire to grow in my faith.

Thus, I seek to make friends with true, practicing Catholics here on this forum. Us young Catholics need all the support we can get ;)

I look forwared to getting to know all of you.

God Bless and peace be with you :)

-Ken

We're glad to have you here with us, Ken.  We have several college students online, as well as an active youth ministry called Quo Vadis, so be sure to drop by their forum and meet Mary Clare and the rest of the crew.

Meanwhile, we'll do our best to help you on your faith journey.  We’re all on this walk together.

Ken,

Welcome to the Forum Catolicum. I deliberately dropped the Romanum part since "Roman" is that tag Protestants left us with and all too many of us, for too many years, have been all too willing to go along with.

We're Catholics, first foremost, Christians, husbands, sons, brothers, retirees, students, writers, beach bum Parrot Heads, scholars and wiseguys, and oh, the last, "American Catholics." Those guys belong to another dissenting church floating somewhere between liberal mainline Protestantism and somewhereland. Even evangelical Protestants run for the sake of their souls: Hopefully in our direction like Marcus Grodi, Scott Hahn, Tom Howard and other heavy hitters - know where to find a soul's true home. (Okay, bad pun, regarding the title of Scott and Kimberly Hahn's great book, "Rome Sweet Home," which you should place prominently in your bookcase, but I'm running on vapors this a.m.)

You're in a real tough archdiocese to be a traditionalist, i.e. a loyalist, Catholic. Cardinal Mahoney's tenure has caused many loyalists across the country to bite their tongues lest we look like dissidents and rock-throwers.

Well, at least we do our grumbling on behalf of the Vatican, so you're really in good company here.

I'm not entirely sure a Cardinal Mahoney would be nearly as patient with his dissidents as a man formerly known as Cardinal Ratzinger. Despite what too many outsiders (and some very ill-informed insiders) would like to continue fooling themselves with, and every one else, i.e., the notion that Catholicism is a "monolithic" structure, you'd be surprised how much discretion each bishop has at his disposal when it comes to being the BOSS of his own diocese. How else could anyone explain the millions of bucks poured into that massive above-ground cemetery vault known as your new "cathedral." Well, I've said enough to know when to back off before I turn you into a "dissident" by association -- even on behalf of the Holy See.

"Have you now or ever been a member of a real loyalist group of Catholics loyal to the Holy See and Holy Father?"

Now, if you really want to be a standout, besides just being a Vatican loyalist out in LaLa Land, you might want to start humming the Notre Dame Fight Song at the most inopportune and inappropriate times you can imagine. Or really go for broke, apply for grad school at ND and start wearing a navy blue and gold cap.

Welcome and I'll keep you in my prayers. Believe me, I've had a good taste of what you're up against out there.

Steven

Hello Ken!

Well, I certainly can tell you're a college student from the time you posted 3:49 am lol.  Not that I can talk, having just graduated myself.  Anyway, I just wanted to welcome you to the forum and invite you (as Rick has already done) to check out Quo Vadis.  We help young adults and teens on their journey into the Catholic Church through ways such as a website, http://www.quovadisyouth.org, a facebook group, pairing youth with Catholics to help them with their faith questions, a monthly e-newsletter and a section of this forum.  We also hope to start chats soon.  Let me know if I can help you in any way!

Glad you're on board!!!!!

God bless,
