A government employee's life was virtually destroyed by hackers who placed child pornography on his computer without his knowledge.

EVERYONE needs to be running up to date anti-virus software and test regularly for malware (spyware, keyboard loggers, etc.), and you should be running a personal firewall as well.

AVG from Grisoft is a good anti-virus program that is free for personal use, but once you download and install it, you must keep it up to date.  Find it at http://www.grisoft.com/ .

Comodo offers a free personal firewall at http://www.comodo.com/ .  They also offer other security software that is free for personal use.

A word to the wise..

In addition to the AVG software, I also run daily (on a rotating basis) Ad-Aware and Spybot.  Both are free downloads from a third party site, easy and straightforward to install.  They check for cookies and tracking software.  A google search will give you a link for them.

I do most of my banking/bill pay online.  My livelyhood also depends on safe internet access.  This is something I do not take lightly.

Consider yourself warned!  LOL

Way back when, before I had a virus program running, I entered 000@0000.com , obviously an illegal address, at the head of my email addresses. Twice the computer crashed, because of the illeagal address, rather than send out a virus which infects an address list and re-emails itself to everyone in your address file. Since those days, I have both an anti-virus program and an anti-spyware program running but I still leave that address in the list.
