I work on Friday Evening and saturday mornings. This year I decided I for sure want to be at church and fast and participate fully in good friday. So I will take off work. I am joining the church this year so I want to take in the full experience. My question is if I should allow myself to work saturday morning, or just take it off and be in prayer and reflection until saturday night. I kind of want to work so as to help the day go by more quickly and I will be done with work long before the vigil begins plus I still need to make money. But would it be more recommended to take both days off to keep the occasion as solemn as possible?
Also, I was a member at a church I used to attend. I never bothered renouncing my membership. I recently wrote them a letter telling them about my joining th ecatholic church and asking them to let me know they took me off the role. If they refuse to comply or take longer for some reason is this a problem with my entering the RCC? Should I make 100% sure they have terminated the membership, or since I have done all I needed to do about it should I enter the church with no worries?

Brian, I work on Saturdays myself, having Tuesdays off instead. Most of the time I also attend the Saturday vigil Mass, often partaking of the sacrament of Penance just prior to that. Then I rest Sundays. I have my hour at Eucharistic Adoration early in the morning, and I spend the remainder of the day resting physically and mentally, mostly in prayer.
So I see no problem with your proposed schedule of attending Good Friday services, working Saturday morning, then participating fully in the Easter Vigil Mass. You can decide your regular weekly schedule in the days following.
God is unconcerned about the details of your schedule; what he is interested in is that you do attend Mass, pray, etc. on a regular basis. It’s up to you, as a prudent adult, to decide how you will accomplish this.
As to severing ties with your old church, you have already done that. You sent them formal notification. If they neglect or refuse to remove you from their membership roster, that is their problem, don’t you think? It’s certainly not going to affect you in any way.

Brian,
David gave you excellent advice. Insofar as the former protestant church wanting to keep you on their roles, I'd chalk it up to laziness or a less divine reason: they still want your tithe. In that case send them some old Italian Lira - one lira for each dollar, and tell 'em Ciao and it's your last tithe because you've Crossed the Tiber!

Personally, I have always taken both days off. Good Friday is a legal holiday in Louisiana, so that makes it easier. (Yes, I did say Good Friday is a legal holiday.) This year, hopefully, I'll be working a new job so I may not have that flexibility.
Then again, I am always involved at church conducting practices for the altar servers, setting up and helping to prepare the liturgy, etc., so I guess I really am working after all.
Do your best to attend the services, and then whatever seems right. There is no harm in working.

I would recomend if possible to take off from everything from about 5 PM Holy Thursday through Easter Sunday. In addition if you have friends or family arriving for the Vigil. Let someone else deal with that, your focus should be the Easter Vigil.
You should just notify your old community, and not worry about it after that.
