Eventually, I’ll get my whole story out of how I’ve come to be interested in the Catholic faith and the times I’ve gotten close and run for cover.
Last night I took a big step, I attended an informal RICA class. And it wasn’t what I expected. I don’t know what I expected, but that wasn’t it. The fellowship and friendship was something that I had missed so deeply and for so long that I didn’t even realize how much was missing.
I was given a small pamphlet of Catholic prayers, many of them I’d learned as a child in another faith, some I’d learned as a result of the peace I’ve found with the Rosary. However, one of them made me break down and cry – the Prayer for Peace.
I’d always known it as the Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi – Mom kept it on the refrigerator for years and years, and I had it read at her funeral.
Seeing it there was an unexpected gift that I'd never expected to find.

Hi Lil,
I had the same reaction to my first RCIA meeting. I had the same reaction when I attended church. I was welcomed by a person near the entrance of the church and enjoyed a social cup of coffee afterward. I have enjoyed my entire Journey.

The best RCIA programs encourage a sense of fellowship. You become part of a family travelling together. In my program (which I will be taking over again next year) I make everyone agree at the beginning that anything said in the room is to be considered confidential, and as the participants begin to get to know each other, they open up more and more from week to week, until by the end of the program we all know each other inside-out. Participants who travelled together a decade ago sometimes still sit together at mass. They have truly become a Christian family, and that's how it should be.
