Hello all,

I'm new to this forum and not sure how or where to post this. I'm searching for the fullness of truth and think that after all these years that I have found it in the Catholic Church. I am 67 years old and my wife 72. I have full support of my wife in whatever decision I make so far as joining the Catholic Church. My wife always said that she could find no fault with the Church but I had been indoctrinated with a lot of false information and have started searching things for myself and can not believe some what I've heard in the past and how false it was. We have attended Mass a few times and plan on doing so on a regular basis. We intend to contact our local parrish and find out when RCIA starts and have full intention of attending. Any suggestions that we could study in the meantime would be greatly appreciated. I have a Catechism which answers a good many of our questions but we look forward to some kind of structured study. I'll probably post more as we develop in our journey.

Jim

Apparently you figured it out.  You did fine.  Welcome to the Coming Home Network and to the Catholic faith.  While waiting for RCIA we'll be happy to do our best to answer any questions you might have.

The Catechism is a great reference, but since you're interested in a more structured study, you might want to look into a course offered by the Knights of Columbus through their Catholic Information Service.  You can find it here.  You can take it online for free, including tests and grading, and you get a certificate at the end.  They will also mail you a book if you prefer to take it that way.

If you just want a book, the new United States Catholic Catechism for Adults is excellent.  It's published by the U. S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and presents the same information as the Catechism but in a better learning format.

Welcome again, and let us know if we can help in any way.

Hello Jim:

Welcome from another James who came into the Church at about your age. Better late than never is my motto.

Rick, as always, made some good suggestions. Now don't laugh, but the first book I bought as I though I "might" consider converting to the Catholic Church was, Catholicism for Dummies.;)

I saw it on the shelf of the local Barnes and Noble and thought it was appropriate for my state of ignorance. Turns out it is quite good. The authors, both priests, are very humorous, and like all books in that series, it covers the basics, but in a serious and orthodox way. I carried it around in a plain brown bag for some weeks, and I still use it for quick reference from time to time.

Even before  I started RCIA I graduated to readings that were a little more in-depth. Speaking of RCIA, you can inquire at your local parish as to their schedule. The first phase is for inquiry. No pressure.

Best regards,

Rick, is this course for women as well as men?  I like taking courses that immediately test your knowledge of what you just read.

If you enjoy reading novels which also instruct, you might consider Marcus Grodi's book, "How Firm A Foundation".   I also enjoyed reading Hann's, "Rome Sweet Home"  and Ray's, "Crossing The Tiber".  The recent novel by Anne Rice, "Christ The Lord: Out Of Egypt", is a good read and her personal testimony (last 30 pages of the paperback edition) is appealing.  I urge you to listen to EWTN as there are numerouis programs you will find interesting.  Grodi's "Journey Home" program and the youth orientated program hosted by Fr. Francis Mary, "Life On The Rock", is instructive and entertaining.  Building relationships with other Catholics can be most helpful also.  Best wishes as you learn and grow.

Just an update, I've read many books and watched a lot of EWTN which has been a real blessing to me. I am currently in RCIA and hope to be received into the church come this Easter Vigil. I lost my wife to pancreatic cancer a month ago so she didn't have a chance to come on this journey with me. We were married 46 years but I'll do what  I need to do from here on. I have not been much at posting on the forums but have been on the Wednesday chat a fair amount lately. Many thanks for the incouragement and kindness of the many that I've been in contact with. Yesterday I drove to Danville, Ky. for the presentation by Scott Hahn. He is really awesome and I did get to meet him and talk with him breifly. It was a 225 mile trip up there for me and I feel that it was worth every mile. Again many thanks to all.
Jim

I am truly sorry for your loss, Jim, but rest assured that your wife is making this journey with you, and at this point is probably leading your way.  And she will lead the rejoicing in heaven when you join the Church, as there is more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over 99 who have no need of repentence.

The Easter Vigil is a joyous celebration in the Church, but imagine the joy in heaven as thousands upon thousands of catechumens are baptized, and thousands upon thousands more Christians are initiated into the fullness of the faith.  And your beloved wife will be your own head cheerleader and your personal patron saint.

Jim:

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss.

I am also in RCIA.  Welcome from a fellow traveler on the journey!

Jim, welcome back to the Forum.

I also entered the Church later in life and after losing a spouse.

You will be in my prayers as you adjust to these big changes.

Grace and peace,
Becky

Hello again to all,
Many many thanks for all the encouragement and prayers that all have offered me in the past few months, not only here but also on the Wednesday chat. At last I am fully Catholic. I was received into the Church at St. Mary's parish in Johnson City, Tennessee Saturday at the Easter Vigil. Truly filled with joy and much happiness for finally having found my way to His Church. I look forward to the time ahead and hope to serve Him well the rest of my days.

Dear Jim,

I noted that I responded to your first post exactly one year ago. I am very happy for you. All the angels and saints rejoiced with you last Saturday!

Jim, it just gets better and better.

God Bless,

Congratulations, and welcome to the family, Jim.  As I suggested to you some time ago, I know your wife was not only walking with you but pulling you along as you made your way to Christ's Church.  We're happy to have you with us.
