Alright folks, I need your help here.  I'm beginning to lose energy to get through my days, and I'm thinking I need some help making sure I'm doing everything to stay "up".  Here's a typical weekday for me:

6:30am Conditioning and/or weight training
8-9am Breakfast
9am-2pm Class (with a one hour break somewhere in there)
2pm-3pm Lunch
3:30pm-7:00pm Softball
7:30-8pm Dinner
8pm-10pm Study Hall
10pm Mass
10:30pm-11:30pm Finish homework/visit with friends/go to bed

I'm usually dead by the time classes end, hence having next to no energy for practice in the afternoon.  Mix in stress, homesickness, stomach aches after eating, etc...  It's all making for me not feeling so well most days.

Any thoughts as to what might be able to "up" my energy level?  What are good foods to eat during meal times?  Any good drinks that would be appropriate between meals for energy?  Ideas?

Whew.  I'm glad the week's almost over!

Ay yi yi!!  One day of your schedule would do me in!

My sole piece of advice is to make sure you eat plenty of protein.  If you're a meat eater, don't skimp there.  Cut back on the simple sugars.  And not too much coffee or other stimulants.   OK, three pieces of advice....

Does all of that have to be there??  Please don't burn out!  You need some time for fun and reflection and ... SLEEP!

Jill

Okay, protein is a good thing.  I will definitely keep that in mind.  I try to stay away from sugary sweets and coffee as much as I can, but sometimes I slip. (Heh, like right now, as I eat a rice crispy treat... eek!)

Unfortunately, the only thing I could cut back on is daily Mass, which I am extremely reluctant to do.  It's the only thing that relaxes me and gives me strength to take on the next day.

((Why in the world did I post this in the RCIA forum?  Oops, I thought it was in the general chat area...))

Kayla, does your team have a trainer?  Do they have regulations about diet, special foods, for energy and stamina?  You may hesitate to approach the coach because you don't want him/her to think you're wimping out already, but there must be resources available.  I tried to eat a high-energy "bar" one day this summer for lunch.  It was so awful it made me sick and I had to go home from work!  Good honest food is much better.  Get to know the cafeteria staff!  And maybe work in a short power nap before softball practice.  Good luck!

Try a high protein liquid supplement such as body builders use. The casein based ones seem to work the best at keeping your blood sugar levels stable. There are also soy based ones which seem to be less helpful. When you need a lift eat something with about 15 grams of protein and some complex carbs, about 10-15 grams or so. A half a meat sandwich works, though refrigeration can be an issue. I often freeze a bottle of dilute fruit juice overnight and use that as ice in my soft insulated pack and put my cheese, sandwiches, etc. in with it. I can drink the juice as it melts and the other stuff stays cold for quite a while.

You seem to be getting up early and going late to bed, so  I suggest trying to get a bit more sleep perhaps cutting back a bit of morning exercise.  I find I have the most energy when I have a proper sleep and good meals.  Like somone else said talk to someone on your team a coach or doctor that can help you make the right food choices.

You might fit in a nap somewhere during your day, or cut short the visiting with friends at night and try to catch up on smalltalk on the weekends. It looks like you aren't getting enough sleep.

Set a timer and train your self to have a 20 minute nap at lunch, and go to bed right afte mass 3 days/per week, chatting with friends on the others.  S Sunday shuld be an absolute minimum day- Mass, homework rest, some hobby like reading (for fun, or a movie, sewing, knitting -which even if you onlyu know how to make scarves is a proven relaxer)

Nuts always help me keep my energy up. Water also helps too.  Let us know how things are going. :)

Thanks for all of the advice.

Unfortunately, I don't think there's much I can do with the sleep patterns- my early morning practice is required.  I might attempt one of the schedules someone suggested, giving up some of my socializing/homework time for sleep.  And I might be able to secure a nap in there somewhere.
