I'm a cradle Catholic so I'm not familiar with the R CIA program. Are there any costs?
Thanks, s.

Some parishes may ask for a donation to help cover the cost of materials but otherwise, no. In fact, under Canon law, it is illegal to ask anyone to pay for a sacrament beyond a voluntary donation to help cover costs.
For example, a church can charge a fee to have a mass offered in a particular person's name. This helps to cover the cost of heating or air conditioning, lights, the priest's salary, hosts, wine, etc. In my diocese the charge is $3.00, and the cost hasn't increased in more than 30 years. Want to guess how much of the cost is covered by $3.00?
We do charge about $10 extra for kids in CCD who are in sacramental prep to help cover the cost of extra books, but those costs are automatically waived for anyone who can't afford it. It's only about a third of the actual costs anyway.

The three parishes I have been involved with and the several parishes RCIA programs around the country I have visited did not. Everything was provided.
Many times people in the program and team members would make donations for various materials and coffee, snacks, etc. We needed a better video projection system and checks started showing up from all over without anyone asking.
I personally feel however that there would be nothing wrong with setting a package price for good materials. However if you cannot pay it you still get the materials. In my "ideal" RCIA process each person would receive about 60-70 dollars worth of books, and other printed and audio materials over the course of the Catechumenate and Mystagogy. This past year they received a package worth about 30-35 dollars without any request for payment and it all was covered by donations to the program.

My wife and I recieved our sacraments together last Easter and are now in the middle of our year of mystigogia. In our parish we were dismissed from Mass every Sunday right before everyone said the creed, and so right before taking offering. No one ever asked us for money once during that year. I have to say, during the early months when we were still wondering if the Catholic Church was our true home, this left a positive impression on us. It felt like their priority was our faith and not our wallets. I'm not saying financial support isn't our obligation. Of course I realize that all the blessings I have are from God and should be available to God. I just feel that in those early days of hearing the call home, it would have sent a mixed message to us.
BTW - I want to thank everyone on this sight who avised me a year and a half ago. I had some serious questions about Mary and the Eucharist and was provided with amazing help. Even one of my best friends who happens to be a protastant minister, found the information from Cajun Rick regarding Mary difficult to refute Biblically. My screen name has changed with the new sight, but, thanks again and it's good to be back.
Also, my children (ages 9 and 15), will be receiving their first communion at this Easter Vigil... infact, my son's Birthday is on Easter this year!
May God Bless You.

Hi Steven,
My parish has a budget for RCIA. From that budget the participants get materials and supplies such as a monthly copy of the Magnificat, Bibles, Crosses to wear around their neck, white robes for use at Easter, worksheets, etc. Our meeting refreshments and our parties are done by the pot luck system. There is no cost for anything to the participants.
