Greetings All,

I have been assigned "Reconciliation" for my presentation topic this year to the RCIA group. Does anyone know of "kits", regarding the sacraments, that a person can buy which come complete with overlays, handouts or other presentation materials?  :)

You are like the fifth to ask about packages for RCIA presentations. I have to consider making up some from my Power Points over the years. Unfortunately I do not have one on Reconciliation, or would send it to you.

I considered buying the Power Point program and equipment until I saw how much it costs. However, if I thought I was not too old or too dumb to learn it I still might try that approach. In addition to my concern regarding getting the information into the minds of the group, I also realize that most of them have already worked for 8 to 12 hours before coming to the meeting and I need to keep their attention and interest.  :)

It is important to provide the information at RCIA (as with teaching any adults) in many forms.  I use Music with a theme towards the toptic to start the session.  I use Power Points for visual as well as video clips and pictures.  I will also sometimes use short audio clips.  I always have a table set up with visual objects that they can come over and pick up things during the break and after the session.  I have them look up passages in the Bible and the Catechism.  I also have Church documents like encyclicals available for them to look at during small group discussions.  I use lots of clear handouts usually anywhere from 4 to 8 pages per topic.  These have Scripture, Catechism, Church Document, Church Fathers,  Church Councils and other references.

If you are doing Rconnciliation.  Ask your pastor to borrow his Rites book.  Look at the section right at the beginning of the Rite of Reconciliation.  It will give you some great information on the theology of the Sacrament.  Of course along with the Catechism and JPII's Encyclical Reconciliatio Et Paenitentia - Reconciliation and Penance.

I don't know about the kits or anything. But just a little suggestion coming from someone who is in RCIA whatever you do give a step by step instruction. I know this seems silly, but seriously, it is so nerve racking walking into a confessional the first time afraid you are going to 'mess up' some how or offend the priest. It is so nerve racking having your first confession, just throw not knowing what to say and when on top of it. My first confession I thought I was going to pass out. These were some of the questions I had at the time: What does the confessional look like, when do I cross myself, what is the process (the step by step... would be handy in a hand out because there is a lot to remember), when do you cross yourself, what if the priest blesses you before you say the initial words "Bless me father for I have sinned"... seems kinda redundant, after he absolves you and says go in peace what do you say. Things like that ran thru my head the first couple of times. May help relieve some of the gitters.

Hi Esther!

I fully agree with Esther!  I was a 40yr old convert and had not a clue as what to expect.  I just said first off, Father, I've not ever done this before.  He was very kind and walked me through it.  After that I went and bought a book at the local Catholic Book Store.  I still get very nervous and feel insecure, maybe I'm supposed to though.  I do have a small credit card size Examination of Conscience, short instruction and Act of Contrition.  I stumbled onto it here on the internet and use it when I get to nervous and forget my act of contrition and also for review while still in the pew praying.
